Happy St. Patrick's Day from our handsome Irish boy!
So nice to feel spring coming!!! With the nicer weather we have the opportunity to mix it up a little bit instead of just arena work. Hacking down the road or riding out can provide great experience for our horses. Getting used to vehicles, birds, scary rocks and bushes, watching where they place their feet, confidence away from their buddies. It is also great for their minds, breaking up the monotony of the same schooling day in and day out. If you can find some hills, bonus! This can be great for muscle development as well! Happy riding :).
My best lady. Many books could be written about all of the lessons she has taught me.
Very proud of this guy. He took quite a bit of convincing to get on the trailer but he settled in for the short ride like a pro. He came out relaxed in a totally new environment and walked into a new barn, with a fair amount of activity, like he had been there every day of his life. When it came time to get back on the trailer for the trip home, he loaded without much trouble at all. We are coming up on one year with this guy. This was his 6 month dental follow up. The s...ignificant uneven wear on his teeth from the right side to left was not allowing him to move his jaw properly side to side. This significantly affected his ability to flex to the right at the poll, short stepped with the right hind and paddled with the right front leg. It is hard to say which issue came first, but they are all connected. We have been working with our equine dentist every 6 months, chiropractor every 3 - 6 months and farrier on a shortened 5 week schedule to get everything aligned for him. Conformationally everything is great so we're very excited to see his moves once everything is working for him. He's going to be a show stopper! See more
When training with Nuno Oliveira ,I remember him distinctly describing the stage in the development of the young horse when the wither rises out of the back. At... the time I wasn't sure what he meant. I believe now one of the most important attributes of the schooling rider is , his or her ability to ride the wither up and clear of the back It then allows for the chest to open up properly and a for the thoracic sling to play its role. So many horses have come to our yard over the years with a conformation similar to the horse on the right with a dropped torso and thankfully left with a disposition like the one on the left. Most of them have left measuring one to two inches higher at the wither , occasionally more. I have borrowed the diagram from : Equine Fitness by Jec A Ballou See more
Feels wonderful to be coming out of the deep freeze .
