Mud season is upon us, and unfortunately spring and scratches often go hand-in-hand. I always advise clients dealing with pastern dermatitis to clip their horses legs. This allows better air circulation and helps eliminate the moisture that causes scratches. I recommend clipping and following with an Betadine scrub - let it sit for a few minutes, towel dry, and apply your ointment of choice. With clipped legs, the topical treatments will be far more effective.

If you’re looking to clip in the spring, I highly recommend a full clip, including legs and face for both appearance and function (but, please, keep the whiskers!) I also want to stress the importance of ensuring steady temperatures before clipping horses who live outside 24/7, as we all know how volatile Calgary’s weather can be and their welfare should always come first!
