Here is a Prince Philip story that has a more common element to it and also a local twist. Bill Collins, a rodeo friend of my Dad , Charlie Chick, came to visi...t Dad at our place a few weeks before Dad passed away. Bill was a renowned horse trainer and cutting horse competitor who was raised in the Fenn district a few miles south of Stettler, and he related a story about meeting Prince Philip. While competing in a cutting horse competition in BC , Bill was approached by a person from the Royal Tour and asked if he would give a private demonstration for Prince Philip. He replied Of course." They set up a time and when the Prince arrived, Bill did a short presentation and then asked Prince Philip if he would care to try and he said he would. Bill knew that Philip was an accomplished horseman so he explained the ner points of what to expect while cutting cattle. Prince Philip !was a natural Bill remembered and enjoyed the experience very much. A few years later Bill was part of a cutting horse exhibition touring England and he was approached by a person representing the Queen and asked if he minded if the Queen came and watched them train before the demonstration. Bill of course agreed and at an agreed upon time the Queen and her entourage along with Prince Philip walked in through the barns to watch a practice session. Bill asked Prince Philip if he would like to do the demonstration and he agreed. Philip had forgotten nothing from his brief training from a few years before and performed very well. Bill was very impressed with the Queen and Prince Philip but of course they shared his love of horses. Bill Collins has passed away since he related that story to us. Unfortunately I don’t know any of his family so I am unsure whether he wrote down any of his memoirs or not but we encouraged him to so at the time. Note: BILL COLLINS IS THE FAR LEFT, CHARLIE CHICK IS FAR RIGHT, RONNIE GLASS IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT

As many of you know Mel Hyland suffered a very serious heart attack in the fall of 2020. Thanks to his strong will and some amazing guardian angels, he is well on his way to recovery! Mel will always give credit where credit is due. His ability to champion others is one of the many traits that makes him a legend! Mel Hyland made sure that the lady who was there to give him the gift of life was recognized with this wonderful gift to show the world that champions can turn an a...verage day into the first day of the rest of your life! Everything happens for a reason especially on that particular day. Mel knows that many first responders never get recognition for there selflessness, so he wanted to gift her this one of a kind special buckle! Crazy thing is that day Charity Meyaard was not on duty, she was a bystander just going for a ride with Mel when her medical conscience kicked in. Thank you Charity, you are a champion and our hero! Festival of Trees virtually opened today and we are proud to be taking part! As a founding supporter of the Festival of Trees, we are excited to take part in... a unique way this year. We will have an exclusive CFR Red Deer -CFR46 memorabilia package in the silent auction and a sponsored tree. Our talented team has decorated a 7.5’ Pre-lit Jasper Cashmere Tree with 450 pre-strung clear lights and cleverly showcased the history of Red Deer. Our celebration spirit and community pride is alive in this Christmas Tree! Festival of Trees has been closed to the public due to the current rise of COVID-19 cases in our province. They are offering a number of ways for our community to participate virtually while supporting their goal of raising funds for electronic fetal monitoring equipment for Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and other care centres in Central Alberta. From November 14 to 28, their silent auction will be accessible online. You will be able to view the auction catalogue and place bids online from any computer or mobile device through www.reddeerfestivaloftrees.ca/auction The Tree Room can be viewed online through Facebook Live every day from November 14 to 28 at www.facebook.com/rdrhfoundation

I gave up. At one point after my accident, I was done. I got off my horse and told my mom, sell them. I thought I was never going to be able to train a horse ...again. I could only ride what others trained. And that wasn’t enough for me. . . I went 9 months without them. Trying to find something to make me as happy as they do. Needless to say, it didn’t happen. I wanted to ride again, but I was stubborn and didn’t know how It could be different, how it could be better. 9 months passed. . . I got a call from a reporter asking if she could do a follow up story with my horses. No one outside of my close circle knew I had quit. So... I said yes. . . My perspective had changed. The chair didn’t leave, I couldn’t control my legs, I had no balance in the saddle. But, the value had grown. The love had not wavered. My soul still belonged on a horse. And it was enough. . . I now train. Not the best, not the most talented, not anything that bucks! But I do train and teach. Not with my legs, but with the skills I do have. . . Don’t give up something you love because it’s different. Don’t change your goal because of an obstacle. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you love something, it’s worth the challenge, the change, and the risk to do what sets your soul on fire. #amberleysnyder #walkriderodeo #setyoursoulonfire - @reaganelkins @amandaclae @oklahomahorses
