In my work with parents, I shift the focus from what we DO to our autistic children - to how we ARE with them. To stop focusing on compliance and start focusing on how we relate to them. Slow down -- reduce your stress - To help your child feel SAFE and protected in their bodies when they’re overwhelmed instead of punishing them once we start showing up with compassion instead of anger their nervous system will naturally calm And when we slow life down, and reduce our str...ess and our child’s, THEN social engagement can emerge spontaneously This gives us a new way of understanding behavior - in my work I use tools that give children (and their parents) a greater sense of safety So when a child is acting out, instead of treating the child as a behavior problem, we need to ask why this is happening we need to understand that in this moment, this child feels unsafe. Once we realize that our kids can’t easily do the mental gymnastics that their typical peers can, we also assume that they are incapable of learning to think in new ways. So, with the best of intentions, we set out to help them get through the day by peppering them with prompts one after the next, day after day. (It is noteworthy that direct prompts are the cornerstone of the most widely accepted interventions for ASD, often leaving children dependent on prompts.) Ultima...tely, all of this can rob parents of their ability to connect with their child, unwittingly becoming instruments whose primary focus is preventing kids from melting down out of frustration. We've officially opened the doors to register for our 1 year program Better Behavior & Beyond! We're starting the next session on October 19th and we're so excited! Our program has grown by leaps and bounds since our 8 week bootcamps back in 2017. Last year we launched the 1 year long program and it's been amazing. The cold weather is coming, mommas! One thing that I cannot stress enough as the cold weather approaches is the importance of spending time outside every day. Fresh air can be a real mood booster, even in the cold. Don't just send your kids outside - get involved in the fun! Go for a nature walk, look at the lights in your neighborhood, or play in the snow. Whatever it is, just have some fun!... What are your favorite ways to get outside in the winter?

Looking for a fun and easy family activity this fall? Leaf rubbing is my go-to! Here's what you'll need: Crayons, oil pastels, or colored pencils A hard surface ... Leaves (fresh or dry) Two pieces of blank paper Arrange the leaves on one piece of paper with the vein side up, lay another sheet of paper on top so that the leaves are sandwiched between the two. Now select your colored pencil of choice and gently rub over the top sheet of paper. Voila! Watch your masterpiece come to life!

Can you believe it's Thanksgiving?! Well, at least in my Canadian neck of the woods! It may be a different type of holiday this year, with many people feeling stressed, unsure, overwhelmed, and burnt out - and parents of kids on the autism spectrum are feeling it even deeper. It's been tough!! BUT, today I am choosing to be GRATEFUL. Grateful for moments of connection with my family (even from afar), and finding hope and light through the darkness.
