Equitas Human Rights 23.11.2020

It was with great enthusiasm that we learned that Alice Wairimu Nderitu of Kenya was appointed by the United Nations as Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide. Alice Nderitu is a long time Equitas' friend and an alumna from our International Human Rights Training Program (#IHRTP) in 2007. She was even a keynote speaker at one of our #EquiTalks! This news comes as no surprise as we've had the privilege of witnessing her dedication to human rights and peace first hand.... You can learn more about her work and relationship with Equitas here: https://bit.ly/3pypENl Alice Nderitu is one of Africa’s most accomplished peacemakers. She is the first woman to lead mediation that has resulted in peace agreements between numerous ethnic groups in Kenya and in Nigeria, a true pioneer. We wish her the best of luck for this new mandate! https://bit.ly/3f2xQ3C

Choices about women's bodies should be made by women, without interference from the state. Reproductive rights are human rights and are essential in the fight for gender equality. These rights are however under constant attack in many countries around the world, like Poland right now for example. Poland already had some of the strictest abortion laws in Europe, but since Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal extensively prohibited access to abortion in the country last month, wom...en have been gathering by the thousands to protest the attack on their reproductive and sexual rights. Despite many countries taking important steps forward to protect reproductive rights, we are also witnessing moves in the opposite direction. The protection of women's rights and gender equality is more than ever important. Check out this map by the Center for Reproductive Rights to learn more about reproductive laws in your country and worldwide: https://bit.ly/2UnLxAw

Today is National Philanthropy Day, which for us, is an opportunity to recognize our generous donors and supporters. Over the years Michael Cooper has contributed to Equitas in a variety of ways. As a donor and a volunteeer, Michael is a true supportor of our work. When asked about why he supports Equitas, he said : They are not throwing dollar bills at a problem. They train people who believe in human rightsand their approach is right on. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Michael's message? For those who have ways and means, it's important to have a social conscience. Happy National Philanthropy Day! https://bit.ly/3lqS5u1

Arts and culture are great ways to learn about human rights! WOMAN is a global documentary that gives a voice to 2,000 women from 50 different countries. The mission of this documentary is to bring to light the injustices women face around the world. Above all, it highlights the inner strength of women and their ability to change the world, despite the many difficulties they face. Based on first-person interviews, WOMAN addresses topics as diverse as motherhood, education, marriage and financial independence, as well as rules and sexuality. You can watch it by registering for the following event organized by La Maison d'Aurore : https://www.facebook.com/events/281900306404344/

Since 2004, Equitas has reached over one million children and youth in 54 communities across Canada through human rights activities in summer camps, classrooms and after-school programs. Through our work in Canada, we aim to advance equality and social justice through a children’s rights-based approach. This approach is founded on the belief that every child, by virtue of being human, is a holder of rights and that all children should have equal opportunity to realize their f...ull potential. A child’s rights-based approach means educating children about their rights, amplifying their voices and including them in decision-making processes. Equitas programs equip young people with knowledge and create spaces where their voices are amplified, in order to ensure that children and youth who sometimes get excluded because of their gender, race, ethnicity, ability, socioeconomics status, etc., have access to programs that support their active participation!
