FOOD FOR THOUGHT Editing to preface this post with wise words from Manolo Mendez Dressage and Wolbunya Equine: "Read, think, agree or disagree, do more research..., take an anatomy course or read a book...all food for thought!" "FACT: You need to be aware of this information; how you act upon it is entirely up to you." I was holding off sharing this one until I could write a longer piece, but with too many other things to do, the time never arrived. I'm sharing it anyway, in the hope it encourages others to learn and decide how they can apply these things in a way that works for them. The post was inspired by the mare these bones belong to, who demonstrated how late even an average size horse can have open growth plates through the base of the neck. Just shy of her eighth birthday, she had caudal physes still open to varying degrees, all the way from C5-T3. Along with several others in my bone library (and another post in its own right) she also demonstrated how asymmetry and crookedness can impact upon the lasting shape of the bone by warping the plates during closure. Asymmetry breeds further asymmetry. Read the poster however it applies in your world and take what you wish; just keep it civil, please! These statements are not intended to be read any particular way; they are meant to make you think about how you can best preserve your horse's soundness in a way that works for both of you. For the best full length piece out there on the topic of skeletal maturity in horses, please read Dr Bennett's "Ranger" Piece - the link is below, and you will find a wealth of free resources on anatomy on the www.equinestudies.org home page! "All horses of all breeds mature skeletally at the same rate... No horse on earth, of any breed, at any time, is or has ever been mature before the age of six (plus or minus six months)." ~ Dr Deb Bennett, "Ranger" Piece (Timing & Rate of Skeletal Maturity in Horses) www.equinestudies.org/ranger_2008/ranger_piece_2008_pdf1.pdf "Bones don’t move muscles; muscles move bones. And if things are not moving properly, muscles will CHANGE bones." ~ The Secret Life Of Bones: Reflections on training, injury, and the equine skeleton as dynamic, living tissue http://www.foundationsofsoundness.com/secret-life-of-bones/ Further reading: Low Heel/High Heel Syndrome http://www.drkerryridgway.com/articles/article-hl-heel.php Ridgway/Mendez Clinic Report http://www.foundationsofsoundness.com/ridgwaymendez-clinic/ Manolo Mendez On Suppling The Crooked Horse www.manolomendezdressage.com//what-to-do-when-your-horse-/ The Congenitally Crooked Neck http://www.foundationsofsoundness.com/congenitally-crooked-

I’ve heard this so many times and yet the bigger picture is never looked at. Your horse is always talking to you. Please listen.

After making the little girl, God said: You’ll need something to lean on. Something with substance that will teach you the value of hard work, perseverance, an...d to never give up. A thing that won’t cast judgment when you mess up in life. Because you will often, it’s just part of growing up and becoming a decent human." "You’ll need something whose impressive physical presence must be respected at all times. A being who could break your bones in a whisper but will never break your heart. A creature who will be there for you when you cry for hours after someone you love lets you down. An unspeaking breathing being that will teach you to check all the noise in your head and completely listen to what he is saying." Sometimes in life you need to let go and just hang on. I call this trust. The terrifying ability to follow something blindly out of the conviction of only your heart. It will keep you centered and restore your faith when life happens. When you realize that you are forgettable to the world you won’t be to this creature." "Something that will keep you truly humbled yet teach you how to fly!" You need to understand the painful reality of death. Sometimes it’s ok to let go. That kindness will always be rewarded before the use of force. And that courage means trusting him to get you safely to the other side." Something to get you out of bed in the trying times. When you feel like you have nothing he will remind you that you are still wanted. Something to give you perspective about what’s really important in life." You’ll need a best friend. Do not take this relationship lightly. It just might save your life someday when you see no out. Treasure it always I’m trusting it to you to take care of for a reason." A creature who will restore your faith about all of the goodness in the world even when you are so broken down that you cast Me aside." In turn with time and healing he will bring you back to Me. Know that your struggle won’t be made alone, and don’t forget to enjoy the ride." "So I will make a horse. Credit to Lacey Messick

I often ask owners to continue with carrot stretches with their horses after treatment... and occasionally ask dog owners to do the same! :-) The image below s...hows some good stretches, these stretches are great to help to horse become supple. Just remember only to ask your horse to stretch after work or after being in the field, this helps to ensure the muscles are warm and elastic..... Noticing a difference between stretches to the left compared to the right? (or vice versa!) Unevenness can be addressed with treatment, book a session to help balance your horse! See more

I like this guy's input. Everyone has to make their own decision on whether he wants fit into the performance world or have a partner to ride over a long time. ...But the worst reason I've heard to ride a baby is because he's "bored". If that's the case, he first of all needs a real herd to interact with (and certainly not live in a paddock by himself) and if he's still looking for attention, there are a million things you can do with him before swinging your leg over!
