I learned this during my bar pool years. Fun Fact: This is also how Angelo Dundee trained Muhamad Ali, with dancing to music. You're welcome!

LET'S GET BACK TO OUR REGULAR SCHEDULED MAYHEM!!!

Erie Billiards 13.02.2021

Set up any practice shot (cue ball & object ball only) on the table. Then toss a dime on the cloth somewhere/anywhere. Depending on your current skill level..., decide in advance how close to the dime your cue ball should land. Experiment with different 'paths' to the dime from the same shot. Learn to use the rails to your advantage. Become PROFICIENT at manipulating . Satisfy yourself regarding your cue ball 'parking' ability. Regardless of how many years you've played the game, don't bullshit yourself on the strength or weakness of your current cue ball CONTROL skills. See more

Use your experience to create these advantages for yourself. YOU KNOW HOW TO WORK THAT CUE BALL! Put the rock in the best possible position to help compensate... for shaky, fuzzy, twitchy and all the other cruel ("Sit down, Old Man.") insults of aging. For the youngsters... this lesson will improve your percentages, too. See more

Student: Your Tiger style doesn't make sense to me. Why would any pool player want to be purely an offensive shooter? The Tiger style is vulnerable and lea...ves an uncontrolled table with every missed shot. Teacher: There are different ways to play the same game. Student: I just don't see the value in playing pool in a way where you either RUN OUT or SELL OUT. Teacher: I love your argument! You are paying attention to Temple of Pool training. But Tiger style can be useful and effective. First of all, the two strongest shooters I've ever known were BOTH Tiger style players. One is a master-level pool player who has won countless matches in 8-ball, 9-ball, straight pool. The other is a snooker player who was my partner when I played on an APA snooker team in North Central Kansas. Both players can keep their opponents sitting in their chairs for long periods of time. Student: But when they miss...? Teacher: There are levels that exist in this old game beyond what you (or I) have experienced directly. The two Tiger players I'm talking about have a ball pocketing/cue ball control ability that exceeds my own level and I'm a pretty fucking good pool player and a decent snooker player. Do you know what my main purpose was on my snooker team? Student: To win? Teacher: My job was to keep track of my partners points! Our league was a bar league with chalkboards and such. When my Tiger partner was shooting, he went into a mental zone where he had no clue how many points he was scoring. And he had ZERO interest in playing defense. I never saw him play safe against a league opponent. Opponents just sat in their chairs and shook their heads when he was at the table. He was THE BEST in his region. He MASSACRED everybody! If you asked him about playing safe or 'snookering' an opponent, he would ask 'Why?' Student: So if your THE BEST, you should play Tiger style? Teacher: Yes. If I'm playing an opponent who is perceived to be MUCH WEAKER than I am, Tiger style is probably my strategy. I'm going to MAUL YOU until you prove that you can stop me. This is such a fun way to play! I feel like I'm humping the table, my opponent's woman and the horses they rode in on... Total dominance! My girlfriend back in my late teens bought me an Incredible Hulk t-shirt that was bright yellow with the green Hulk. "HULK SMASH PUNY POOL PLAYERS!" Student: It's not for me. I hate the feeling of selling out a game. Teacher: I understand and agree. But I want you to respect THE VALUE of Tiger in the Temple of Pool system. Tiger is the HEART of everything. Student: Even Crane style? Teacher: Yes. The Crane has a Tiger HEART. The Crane is an aggressive attacker. The Crane is not ducking, not hiding with safety play. The Crane is using strategic defense to rip an opponent's nuts off. Student: How about Snake style? Wait. I get it. Snake is a balance of Tiger & Crane. Teacher: Yes. Snake style is a balance of offense and defense, BOTH BEING WAYS TO KILL an opponent. Offensively, I conceived the Snake as being a VIPER, a striker, a ball pocketing machine. Defensively, I conceived the Snake as a CONSTRICTOR that suffocates an opponent: NOT a 3-foul specialist, a submission specialist. Win by CHOKING OUT your opponent. Keeping strict control of the table, forcing opponents to sell out. Student: That's my main style of play, Snake. Teacher: Mine too! But I want you to understand the Tiger Heart. Crane, Snake, Leopard... the Leopard style combines a Tiger Heart with the mind of a creative, business person, a MULTI-TASKER. Student: How about Dragon? Does the Dragon style have a Tiger Heart? Teacher: Student: OK, I understand now. Teacher: As a Snake stylist, SOMETIMES your Snake percentage play isn't needed. Or SOMETIMES your Snake style is just going through the motions, playing 'Snake' in name only, but without the ferocity... the HUNGER. Student: Tiger is the hunger. Teacher: Tiger is the hunger. The Tiger HEART. At least that's how I envision the Temple of Pool strategic system. Student: Isn't it YOUR system? You created Temple of Pool, right? Teacher: Yes. But each practitioner envisions THE SYSTEM in his/her own unique way. But I want ALL Temple of Pool practitioners to understand the importance of the Tiger HEART.

This is a match between Efren and me in a pro tour event in Reno in the mid ‘90’s. This is from my private video library so no one that wasn’t there in person e...ver saw this shot before. I found hardware and a software program that allows me to transfer my old vhs tapes onto my computer. This is a hidden gem that I felt needed to be shown to all pocket billiard players. Enjoy! A couple of key elements that influenced my game came from a book 'Zen and the Art of Archery' in which the master said "the hitter and target are one" and the ...release is like "snow falling off a bamboo leaf"...no one knows the moment, but when the moment comes you will always remember that feeling. One of pool's greatest rewards is the feeling you get when you perfectly connect the cue ball to the object ball....that special moment of clarity before the completion...when we're not quite sure whether we are playing the game or the game is playing us. The Game is the Teacher www cjwiley.com

What players are missing when they aren't performing at their best is a powerful, and reliable system. This doesn't mean some kind of top secret "aiming syste...m," they lack an over all playing system that establishes a foundation they can build on and improve every day, in the most effective way. Performance in pool or anything else requires a system, even walking down stairs, and driving a car you'll have a system, it just has become subconscious (natural) so it's not noticeable. Systems underlie every phenomenon, and are everywhere one looks for them. They are limited only by the observer’s capacity to comprehend the complexity of the observed entity, item or phenomenon. The GAME is the Teacher

Extra words for Temple of Pool practitioners. Customizing the 5 Animal Styles. In this example, condense 5 styles into 3 attack strategies. This may be bes...t suited for advanced players, but I want all TOP followers to FIND your best tactical FIT; find what works for you. I've used various hybrids of TOP's 5 Animal Style over the years. This one was developed as I was writing the Mantis Combat book. In this customization, I view EVERYTHING in pool as an ATTACK. The Tiger in its purest form is vulnerable and I decided to blend it with Leopard's two-way offensive shots. The result: I can try to stay at the table and include a little more strategic sensibility on lower-percentage shots by creating two-ways, this is my OFFENSIVE ATTACK. I tend to use this against . Many semi-pros UNDERMINE their attempts to defeat pros by mistakenly using (in Temple of Pool terms) Tiger. These local studs (when trying to move into the regional/national big leagues) try to simply (offensively) outshoot their pro opponents; almost ALWAYS a mistake! The Crane in its purest form is limited to leaving tough shots for opponents. I decided to blend it with Leopard's dual purpose safety style. The result: When its time to play safe, I look for ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES to simultaneously either a) also SOLVE a problem (like a cluster or an awkward long rail shot) or b) also CREATE a problem (like forcing opponent balls together) for my opponent. This is my DEFENSIVE ATTACK. I tend to use this against . I dedicate myself to being untouchable, i.e., my emphasis is leaving them NOTHING & watching them always come to the table with a frown. The Snake (my personal favorite style) in its purest form is kind of boring at times; effective, but tedious. So I decided to bring more Freedom & Flow into my plodding. The result: When I'm beginning my match or when I'm struggling, I stick with standard Snake. Once I'm warmed up and playing well, I allow the Snake protocols to be executed more Freely and Automatically. This is my BALANCED ATTACK. This is how most pros play. This is also how most semi-pros trying to improve should play (instead of trying to Tiger 'maul' the better players). I tend to use this against - and those slightly better than I am. There's MORE THAN ONE WAY to play this great, old game. Eddie Achey, Temple of Pool founder

Who would like to watch the entire Masconi Cup @ Erie ... would there be enough people interested that it would be worth us to open during the morning and day !!! If there is enough interest i will schedule employees and we will open Dec 1-4 for every match of the Masconi Cup We could also do a team event here at Erie on Dec 5th to cap off the Masconi Weekend with a 4 team 4 Member Masconi style Tournament (obviously not identical) but something fun ... I am thinking a team can consist of 2 master or A players 1 b player and 1 C player ...

Blind Dog and Erie Billiards have seen the post from Cuenique/Frank regarding the postponing of their leagues. We support Frank and wish for him to have a quick... and safe return to leagues. We have reviewed the yellow stage guidelines and will continue to operate until we are told otherwise! We will be strictly enforcing mask wearing (this includes myself) mask will be worn at all times and failure to wear your mask while playing can/may and will result in a forfeit of that game. Let be safe and I hope everyone knows and understands that if we are asked to shut down or we hear from the Windsor Health Unit that we have to shut down we will, until then let's tighten up on our procedures and keep everyone safe.

In 2002 I became good friends with Hank Haney (before he was Tiger Woods golf coach), we talked a lot about the similarities between Pocket Billiards and Golf.......there are many! One day Hank was curious and ask me point blank..... "When did you know For Sure you were a champion pool player, was there a specific experience, process or thought?" I knew my relationship with Hank was bonded by mutual respect and he was dead serious!.... I answered honestly and immediately without hesitation reaching into a deep filing cabinet of my mind to locate the answer..... "There was a day that I realized I was making the "hard" shots, but missing the "easy" ones in critical situations.....it was frustrating.... and didn't make since..... I'd tried several things, failing each time, and was still inconsistent so I "gave up" and made a resolute commitment to no longer judge them as *hard and easy" ....from that moment on I treated them all the same.....there were no more hard or easy shots I Made them virtually the same! I strived for the same alignment, same tempo, same mental attitude, same aiming, same object ball target, same body positioning, no matter what the shot I treated them all the same with no judgement and no expectations. Over the course of the next three weeks of competition I performed the same, consistent results, and no longer missed "easy" shots That moment I knew I had uncovered the perfection of the game by giving up judgement and expectations. I had become a champion,.not of a Game or Sport, more like an Art Form, a satisfying form of self expression like a master musician or sculpter in a creative zone THAT was the exact moment, Hank..... make sense concerning the context of your question?" Hank went into deep thought, carefully processing my words, this is what made him a genius at the art of golf, he ran things through his mind meticulously unraveling the details. Hank, eyes clear and focused now looked me straight in the eyes....."Yes, bud, that was exactly what I needed to hear!" I have never seen Hank play a game of pool that he didn't make a written note of who won and something that he learned during the game in a notebook. That dedication is impressive, if i'd done that (my entire life) the pages would fill a swimming pool with the physics, geometry and plethora of experiments I'd experienced on a pool table! A few years later he documented what I told him in his book.... he shared the information to coach Tiger who utilized a similar mind set to win the British Open Golf Championship in 2006 (he decided to NOT use his driver).... ironically Tiger was making all the hard shots and missing some easy ones... coincedence?! If you like pool and/or golf I will encourage you to read Hank's book it's called 'The Big Miss'..... a masterful depiction of how he handled the challenging position coaching one of the greatest athletes/artists that ever lived; Fast Forward a couple years..... In 2012 I was the Mosconi Cup Captain, Johnny Archer and I would stay up after everyone else was in bed and strategize about the next day (Johnny had an amazing 6/0 performance that year and the last day it was 9/9 before we lost the last match). A discussion about treating all the shots the same came up and Johnny had actually read Hank's book cover to cover in 3 days, commenting how shocked he was to see a fellow pocket billiard professional in that particular golf book. There are no coincedences, my friends, the "shots" we take in life are consistently satisfying when we Decide and Commit to make them that way, releasing judgement and expectations...trusting our MasterCreator!.
