Who Needs CPAP? CPAP treatment is synonymous with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and these are the patients that primarily need the machine. When you have OSA ...you stop breathing periodically throughout the night because the airway collapses. This might be due to decreased muscle tone in the airway, an enlarged tongue or another factor, but it is virtually impossible to get a restful sleep if you have OSA. With obstructive sleep apnea, some patients stop breathing up to 30 times in one hour. Without treatment, more serious health conditions such as cardiovascular disease may become a factor.
