It's flu season...and COVID season. Dr. Galbraith encourages everyone to get a free Flu vaccine at their pharmacy. It's painless! Also, see some of the frequent questions and myths about Influenza and the Flu vaccine. As you know, Influenza and COVID-19 share many similar symptoms. A painful swollen knee is a common problem we see at ESM. Many things can cause this. Most aren't serious, but some are! Here's an example of 2 patients we saw on the same day with completely different causes of knee pain and swelling. We were able to successfully drain their knee under ultrasound guidance. The 1st patient has fluid that is clear and transparent. This often looks like apple juice. This is common with knee arthritis. The 2nd patient has fluid that is cloudy and opaque. There is a lot of inflammation in the fluid. When it was analyzed under the microscope, we could see crystals. This is common with gout.
