I am a New Zealander living in Québec, Canada. Two of, by most commonly measured standards, the safest, most tolerant places in the world. Within the last two and a half years, both have witnessed senseless, prejudicial slaughters carried out by angry young men. No one wakes up in the morning and randomly decides to go on a killing spree with the objective of killing as many Muslims, Jews, LGTBQs or other groups as possible. There are always shifts, signs, actions and warning flags. Perhaps it is time for us to take a deeper, harder look at who we actually are, rather than trading on the convenient collective stereotyping of who we like to think we are.
