Children who witness abuse carry the same risk and harm of that of their mother. Children who have experienced or have witnessed abuse within the home can suffer from developmental, psychological, and social issues throughout their lives. These effects can be short term or long term depending on the child, and what they have been exposed to within their home. Abuse can include physical, emotional, psychological, verbal & financial harm to a person, threatening/intimidating b...ehaviour, and an imbalance of power and control. Children are known to be resilient, however they’re also like sponges and are very in tune with their surroundings. Often times children cannot communicate stress and fear effectively, therefore it comes out in a variety of behaviours. If you have concerns about a child who may have been exposed to domestic violence, please contact Esprit Place to access individual or group counselling for kids aged 5 to 11, facilitated by our Children’s Voices worker. Program topics include feelings, types of abuse, power and control, personal boundaries, safety planning and self-acceptance. The staff at Esprit Place provide supportive counselling and information to assist women in changing their lives and the lives of their children.
