In the early hours of Friday 26 February, 2021 we received the sad news that Les Peate had passed away the previous afternoon. We were notified by the Peate family, but for the past three decades we have been proud to consider Les Peate as a much loved member of the Esprit de Corps family
Readers of Esprit de Corps know Scott Taylor as an outspoken columnist whose trajectory can be controversial. His on-course opposition to Nazis, their collaborators and apologists, in Canada and abroad, should not be contentious, especially to members and veterans of Canada’s armed forces.
In the past week the RCAF’s famed Snowbirds air demonstration squadron has found itself in the media spotlight on two separate occasions. The first instance was the release of the final report on the tragic crash that occurred shortly after a takeoff from the Kamloops, BC airport on May 17, 2020. espritdecorps.ca//on-target-it-is-high-time-for-rcaf-to-re
Since the enactment of the New Veterans Charter in 2006, the National Council of Veteran Associations (NCVA) has taken the strong position that the government has not sufficiently addressed the plight of veteran families, particularly in circumstances where a member of the family, often a spouse, is required to act in the role of caregiver to a disabled veteran. Think back to kindergarten. Remember that big piece of wood with various circles, squares, triangles and the like cut out of it? They would give you little bits of wood, point at the board, and say have at it. Now in case you didn’t know at the time, this was a test. https://espritdecorps.ca/commentary/square-pegs-round-holes
This past week saw the burgeoning military sexual misconduct scandal continued to spiral out of control. Inspired by what many are referring to as the Canadian Armed Forces Me Too moment, victims who were long silenced and sidelined are finding their voice. espritdecorps.ca//on-target-this-is-the-canadian-militarys
Telemus Inc welcomes John Fisher as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Last week the Canadian military was dealt another blow on the sexual misconduct front when a senior female officer wrote that she was resigning from the forces in disgust. In a letter to her Commanding Officer, LCol Eleanor Taylor requested an immediate release from the military. espritdecorps.ca//on-target-senior-female-officer-quits-th
Very happy for our designer to be featured by Leading Ladies Canada!
In mid-September Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said the Liberal government was looking to speed up military procurements as a way to jump-start job creation. The plan would be to fast-track parts of the government’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, to help fuel the economic recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Late last week it was reported in the media that the Department of National Defence had ordered a halt to its controversial program of ‘weaponizing’ their Public Affairs branch.
What a great show of support from our community. With our 2nd annual Veteran Business Helping Veteran initiative, we managed to smash our goal of $12000 and ra...ised $20000! Last year we recruited 13 veteran owned businesses and raised $6000. This year we grew that number to 26 veteran businesses and $20000! These funds will be critical to allow @warrioradventurescanada to continue their journey and provide a therapeutic adventure program for first responders and military members dealing with OSI and PTSD issues. Thank you to all the leaders who stepped up and committed to helping our own. If you’d like to donate you can do it directly on @warrioradventurescanada’s website or connect with us to help you point you in the right direction.
The National Council of Veteran Associations in Canada (NCVA) continues to call for dramatic and innovative steps to be taken by Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) to address the current unacceptable backlog and turnaround times experienced with respect to veterans’ disability claims.
The Canadian Army is equipping its snipers with new weaponry and will soon be going to industry with its specifications. The procurement will be for 229 bolt action sniper rifles to be designated as the C21. The rifles will be used for long-range shooting and will come in two different calibres.
To the brave men and woman who gave their lives to allow us to live the way we live. In Peace. We say thank you and we will never forget your service.
