Today is the 100th birthday of a remarkable Canadian. He is Commander (Retired) Peter Godwin Chance, of Sidney, BC. Cdr. Chance has lived through some of the m...ost momentous and turbulent times in world history. During the Second World War, Cdr. Chance served in a variety of Canadian warships including HMCS SKEENA, HMCS SEA CLIFF, and HMCS GATINEAU. He is one of the last remaining survivors of the long-running, hard-fought, Battle of the Atlantic, and also participated in the Korean War, when he saw combat again as part of Canada’s support of UN operations there. From April 1951 to July 1952, he served aboard the Tribal-class destroyer HMCS CAYUGA, overseeing navigation and air direction during bombardments along the coastline. Cdr. Chance has been a staunch supporter of the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Armed Forces, and has contributed greatly to public understanding of the RCN’s important contribution to history. Through it all, he has retained the lively wit and sense of humour and fun which have won him countless friends and admirers. To celebrate the many achievements of Cdr. Chance, the museum is renaming its Battle of the Atlantic Gallery in his honour. It will now be called the Peter Godwin Chance Gallery. Happy centennial birthday, Cdr. Public Service Announcement Bentinck Island Range The land-based demolition range at Bentinck Island will be in use 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily from Wednesday, December 9, to Friday, December 11, and Monday, December 14, 2020.... Bentinck Island is located near Race Rocks in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Used as a terrestrial demolition range by the Canadian Armed Forces, local residents will likely be unaware of the activities except on days when environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and wind direction affect how far the sound will travel. Numerous studies have been conducted on the potential environmental effects of Bentinck Island demolitions. Specifically, blast noise in the marine environment during land-based demolitions is almost undetectable by acoustic equipment above that of other underwater background sounds such as waves and marine life. The public is reminded that no unauthorized person may enter this area and trespassing is prohibited. ----------------------- Avis d’intérêt public Champ de démolition de l’île Bentinck Le champ de démolition de l’île Bentinck sera utilisé entre 0900h-1600h durant le mercredi 9 décembre au le vendredi 11 décembre et le lundi 14 décembre 2020. L’île Bentinck est située près de Race Rocks dans le détroit de Juan de Fuca. Lorsque les Forces armées canadiennes utilisent ce champ de démolition terrestre, les résidents ne devraient normalement pas se rendre compte des activités sauf quand des conditions environnementales (température, humidité et direction du vent) sont favorables à la propagation sonore. An Honours and Awards ceremony was held at the Chief and Petty Officers Mess Esquimalt last week. #BZs included: Petty Officer Second Class Justin Morrison, who was promoted to his current rank and received his scroll; Chief Petty Officer Second Class Mark Grimard, who received a MARPAC Bravo Zulu for his outstanding work during the pandemic; Anna Yang, who received a Base Commander's Bravo Zulu for her dedication and innovative work during the pandemic; and Chief Petty Officer Second Class Sue Frisby, who received her first Canadian Forces' Decoration clasp. #CFBEsqSupports

Public Service Announcement Monthly Test of CFB Esquimalt’s Mass Notification System The monthly test of CFB Esquimalt’s Mass Notification System will take place on December 2, 2020, at 11 a.m. for approximately one minute.... Residents may hear sirens and verbal messages from speakers mounted on tall poles in Dockyard, Naden and Work Point in Esquimalt. Due to a variety of environmental factors including temperature, humidity and wind direction it may be possible that the sirens will be heard in neighbouring municipalities. Because CFB Esquimalt covers a large area, this system will be an invaluable tool during an emergency for communicating important information to base employees, contractors and those visiting our facilities. During the monthly tests, two tones plus a message will be used - the ‘test tone’ (alternating tone), a message in English and French and the ‘all clear’ tone (similar to Westminster chime). Audio files are available on the Maritime Forces Pacific website. Wurtele Arena recently saw three banners grace its rafters honouring three of the Base’s stand-out hockey players Joe Lescene, Rob Sneath, and Keith (Butch) Cowden. Many thanks to Kelsey Khol of FMF Cape Breton, FMF’s Shops 122, 123, and 124a as well as Kevin Zalba, the arena manager (pictured) for creating the tributes. Zalba is currently considering a process that would help decide how future banners would be added to the arena. Nothing demonstrates partnership and interoperability with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) quite like a KAEDEX (fun fact: Kaede means maple ...tree in Japanese). On 17 November 2020, HMCS Winnipeg / NCSM Winnipeg and its embarked CH-148 Cyclone helicopter conducted a KAEDEX, or cooperative deployment, with Japanese Ship (JS) Shimakaze and its maritime helicopter. The KAEDEX included a PHOTOEX, cross-deck landing and gift exchange, additional operations training, and a final, farewell pass between the two ships. A CH-148 Cyclone helicopter from 443 Squadron will also participate for portions of the sail past. The public is encouraged to watch the sail past via our livestream. Just under 40 flights and 6,600 passengers and crew landed in the small town of Gander, NL whose population is less than 10,000. #9Wing Gander played an important role assisting with security, transportation, telecommunications, the unloading and loading of aircraft, as well as accommodations and food services for three of the flights.
