There is a reason so many of us health practitioners encourage the use of Vitamin D, especially during the colder months here in Canada. Stress. We experience it during times of excitement and pleasure, such as sex or exercising, but most often we relate it to emotional anxiety, diseases and physical injuries and how an individual manages stress plays an important role in his or her level of health. Stress can have a negative impact on our physical appearance, mental/emotional health, and body systems leading to several health concerns. Weight gain, hypertension, depression, immune suppression, irritable bowe...l, and many more. Unfortunately, during this time of physical distancing and self-isolation, many of us are relying on things such as caffeine, alcohol, drugs, and unhealthy food choices to help us cope with our stress and get us through the next few weeks, months or however long it may be leaving us vulnerable to negative health effects. Some positive coping means to help get through these times include things such as diaphragmatic (deep) breathing, exercise, time management (YES! Plan out your day and what you want to accomplish ~ books to read be it educational, self improvement or recreational, home workouts, activities with the family), and finally your diet. In the process of our bodies managing stress we burn through so many nutrients vital to the overall health of our body. It is especially important during this time that we focus on reducing our intake of caffeine/alcohol, eliminating refined carbohydrates and including a variety of colorful whole foods and eating regularly planned meals in a relaxed atmosphere.
