**Tech Tip Tuesday** Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) cylinders such as Kaba Ilco, Best, Arrow or KSP use pinning on a 0.0125increment system labeled A...2. No one uses the A3 system and A4 is rarely used, so the A2 system is the most common in the marketplace. If you are confronted by an A2 system where the Control Key is not available, there is a very simple technique for decoding the combination. 1. Sacrifice one of the cores (a spare one in storage is ideal) and carefully remove the tumblers, paying particular attention to the top pins (AKA drivers). 2. Measure each top pin and divide by 0.0125 ( a top pin of 0.125 translates into a 10 or 0.050 becomes 4) 3. Subtract that number from thirteen (13 10 = 3 or 13 4 = 9) If you get a number less than zero or more than nine, then you didnt measure the right pin or the core was pinned improperly. Improperly pinned SFIC cylinders do not work well, so double check which pin is the top pin. 4. The result of your math is the Control Key cut. If the first example was in the first chamber, then the first cut of the Control Key is three. If the second example is the top pin from the second chamber, then the Control Key cut would be a nine. So the first two cuts of your Control Key is 39. 5. Remember, SFIC keys are measured from the tip stop to the bow and the MACS is nine, so you can put the shallowest cut (zero) right next to the deepest (nine), but while it is possible it is not recommended. 6 By sacrificing one core to decode the Control Key, you now have the ability to pull all the other cores to service or replace them easily.

**TECH TIP TUESDAY** What is the difference between a bit key, a barrel key and a "skeleton" key? Bit keys must be cut from a key blank in order to operate a sp...ecific lock. Barrel keys are similar to bit keys, but have a hole at the tip that permits them to slide over a post within the lock. Skeleton keys are pre-cut (or bitted). Locks using these styles of keys are frequently found on antique furniture and clocks, older homes and restoration projects. Due to the design of this older style of locks, skeleton keys may fit and function in more than one lock. #ilco #TechTipTuesday
