Today 100 years ago, members of the Supreme Council of the Allied Powers France, United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy and Japan recognised the Republic of E...stonia de jure.* This long-awaited piece of news spread like wildfire in Estonia, flags were flown and formal assemblies and spontaneous celebrations began. There were even fireworks and people dancing in the streets in Tallinn. Declaring the independence of the Republic of Estonia on 24 February 1918 was one thing, ensuring the formal recognition and support of major powers was quite another, and now it had been attained. The de jure recognition of the Republic of Estonia brought increased political and territorial security. It opened the door to subsequent acts of recognition and provided an opportunity to launch friendly relations and boost economic prosperity through trade. The de jure recognition 100 years ago gave Estonia the chance to join the League of Nations, and Estonia duly became a member on 22 September 1921, which allowed Estonia to step on the international stage as a full-fledged state. The foundation laid a hundred years ago and even earlier is a solid basis for warm and unique relations today, and we are marking the centenary of these relations together. Today we invite you to join us in celebrating the friendship between our countries and people and raise a glass to their future. * After the First World War, most European countries and the United States recognised the right of self-determination of peoples in principle but the de jure recognition of the Estonian state was slower to arrive. In May 1918, the United Kingdom, France and Italy gave de facto recognition to the representative body of the Estonian people, but not yet as a new state (Japan followed in June 1919 and Belgium in June 1920). Earlier, the Republic of Estonia had been recognised de jure by Soviet Russia, which signed a peace treaty with Estonia in February 1920 in Tartu, ending the Estonian War of Independence, and by Finland in July and Poland in December 1920.

INVITATION TO MARK THE BALTS’ UNITY DAY On the occasion of the Balts’ Unity Day 2020, we would like to invite you to attend the event on the Parliament Hill, o...n Tuesday, the 22nd of September 2020, at 5.00 p.m. Lithuanians and Latvians celebrate the Balts’ Unity Day to commemorate the defeat of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword in the Battle of Saul on 22nd September 1236. Parliaments of Latvia and Lithuania designated 22nd September as the Balts’ Unity Day in 2000. In Canada we launched tradition in 2016. Thank you to Inra Eihenbauma for a great idea. Since then, every year all three Baltic Countries organise event in Ottawa expressing their unity, mutual support and solidarity. Starting at 4.50 p.m., gather in the middle of the Parliament Hill grounds next to the Centennial Flame. We invite to bring small national flags and be ready to sing national anthems joined by the voices of members of our local communities. Afterwards we invite all participants to join us for informal gathering. Tomorrow, September 4th, at 5pm Estonian time (10am Ottawa time), Estonia will host an informal meeting of the UN Security Council regarding the human rights si...tuation in Belarus. Estonia considers it important to draw the world's attention to the human rights situation in Belarus and to give the floor to those whose voices are being suppressed. The Security Council has previously pointed out that a serious violation of human rights could be an early sign of a conflict of international concern. The meeting will be chaired by Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu and an overview of the human rights situation will be provided by Anaïs Marin, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Belarus; Belarusian opposition presidential candidate Svyatlana Tsihanhanskaya; Valiantsin Stefanovich, Vice-Chair of the Viasna Center for Human Rights, and Volha Shiahovich, a legal expert at the Belarusian Association of Journalists. The meeting will be live on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Youtube and Facebook pages. It can be watched by anyone around the world through the following links: Youtube: https://youtu.be/F4mQE8taqJA Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/valismin/live/ More information can be found here: https://vm.ee//estonia-holds-discussion-human-rights-belar
