Monday morning gym sounds... Whether it’s the CrossFit season or I’ve decided to work on building size/endurance/power I always like starting Monday off with the conventional compound lifts. Alternating between back/front squats, conventional/sumo deadlifts, cleans/snatches, bench/presses etc. It’s a great way to build foundational strength, evaluate how the body is doing, and fire up the CNS for a big week ahead! - How do you start your Monday’s??? Garage days! Oh how much they’ve given me... You know, this pandemic has taken a lot from far too many people. But it’s also been a provider. A provider of opportunity. The opportunity to flourish and grow. I’ve spent countless hours before and during this pandemic between these four walls, and I hope to spend twice as many in the years to come. -... What gets me though is the level of happiness such a simple place can bring. It’s crazy how four plywood walls, horribly over saturating windows , and an average temperature of -2 degrees can be the place I feel the warmest. Much like the pandemic, it’s given me the opportunity to better myself, experiment, teach, and escape. It’s provided only as much as I was willing to put in. - There’s always a bright side to the dark and gloom. Though the pandemic has crippled many aspects of our modern society, it’s lead to the growth of so many new and exciting things! It’s given life to my business, purpose to my days, and reasons to keep on keeping on. And I’m thankful for it every single day! - Like a personal snatch PR, the best moments only last so long...so cherish, learn, and respect those moments, for they are the best teacher one could ask for. Hand eye coordination - Yesterday with two hockey teams I work with, we looked at hand eye coordination. We saw a series of different drills from partner mirroring drills (working on true agility), tennis ball reaction drills (reaction and attack), and lastly the one pictured above, multiple stimuli drill. Just off camera in the video is a phone with a randomized pattern. Purple = blue cone, green= orange cone, left is left and same for right, blue cone = 1 and orange con...e = 2. Fair to say there is a lot of info to process. Whilst balancing on a single leg (central stability) players have to watch the phone (visual queue), react verbally (verbal reaction), and react physically (motor unit reaction). With the @switchedontraining app and a few cones we were able to create all the sensory stimulation we find in competitive sport. - Other variations included partner assisted. Where one partner saw the screen and communicated it to their partner whom reacted physically. Same went for when I had one partner seeing the phone, reacting, and their partner reacting to their motions. - Endless possibilities! But end of the day it’s important to recall the necessity for training the brain. - An added note, as of recently we have added mentality sessions and yoga to further enhance cognitive restraint and relaxation. STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING - This was a good bit of S&C I got up to the other day. It’s a great way to implement movement cycling and pacing. - A: 7 rounds ... 21 Double unders 15 SA DB snatch 9 Deadlift (155) Rest 3 mins 5 rounds: 15 cal air bike 9 TTB 6 clean (155) forgot to film lol Rest 3 mins 3 rounds: 9 burpee jump overs 6 snatch (135) 3 strict handstand push-ups - Beautiful mixture of movements. Above are three pictures, all of which taken inside of a year. Picture one, Feb10th 2020. A disappointed, conflicted Josh with the urge to get back into shape no matter what it took. Picture two. May 24th 2020. A rather lean, mean, fighting machine. With a severe lack of energy, a binge eating disorder, and an obsession over an unattainable physique. Working 80 hours a week, struggling to find time for himself. ... Picture three. Feb 10th 2021. A happy, healthy, and strong young man. Still working 80 hours a week, still hustling in the gym, maybe even more than ever. But has a strong sense of purpose, direction, and understanding. A healthy relationship with food, family, and friends. And a clear vision of life and where it leads. It’s truly astonishing what challenging yourself to a year of (anything) can do. 365 days of fitness has shown me how to be a better coach, learner, competitor, friend, family member, and employee. I’ve learnt what I truly enjoy, what makes me happy, where I want to be in life, what it’ll take to get there, and who I want to be with when I get there. It’s given me the opportunity to discover my true intentions, my weaknesses, and my strengths. Most of all it proved to me that you can do anything you put your mind to. In 365 days I’ve become certified as a Personal Trainer and Strength coach, built a business, coached over 60 individual clients, got a job as an S&C coach, made new friends, became closer to family and some old friends, helped a lot of people find their way into fitness, got 2 new tattoos, fished, hunted, and hiked less then I wanted to, and enjoyed every second of it. I ran over 2000km, cycled 3000km, swam 5km, lifted a sh!t ton, lost 25lbs, gained 15lbs, had an eating disorder, built a health relationship with food, lost strength,PR’d my clean and jerk by 30lbs, learnt that bodybuilding isn’t my favourite way to train, learnt that functional fitness is, and I developed a true sense of what it means to be an athlete. I could sit here all day and chat about what I’ve learnt in these life-changing 365 days, but I’ve got 365 more to get after! Progression is built through consistency and tested by passion" JB

OH WALKING LUNGE - The hip flexors are among the few muscle groups that dictate a large proportion of your athletic ability and seem to be more often than not undertrained. The rotator cuff muscles too are influencers of athletic ability and often go undertrained. SO! Why not combine the two. The OH walking lunge targets central and peripheral stability in the shoulder complex while taxing the lower body via hip extension and flexion.
