Have you ever thought about how much you talk to yourself? Your internal narrative. The narrative that we constantly have running in the background. Did you know that most of our daily conversations are internal discussions? If the internal conversations we have are always negative, then we are constantly telling ourselves negative things about who we are which ultimately impacts how we show up for ourselves.... Let's be honest, we all have these negative internal conversations at some point in our lives. It's not about judging whether you do or don't - it's about supporting yourself to shift these narratives. I'm not saying go stand on a mountain top & shout positive self-narratives (although, all the power to you if that's what you wanna do!) BUT... I encourage you to check in to what you tell yourself & shift these to a more neutral narrative. PS. read more about this topic on the blog here: https://bit.ly/3cZxcos

The Grinch is not stealing Christmas this year Covid is. This is how I am feeling this year, as Christmas has basically been cancelled. With the heaviness of everything going on around us, it's easy to lose sight of ourselves. But if this year has gifted me anything it is this: It has gifted me the opportunity to redefine how I see and approach Christmas and the season.... Every day I find three things to be grateful for and this has helped me navigate through the year. I highly encourage you to do the same. If you're finding it extra hard to navigate through the last bit of this year, go check out my latest blog "Grieving through Christmas" and ask yourself the 4 exact questions I've asked myself. Goal setting in a way that honours where you've come from first.

You know yourself best. If it means stepping away to process your feelings, do it. If it means taking a nap, do it.... If it means cancelling plans so you can be alone, do it. If it means saying no because your plate is already full, do it. When we take time to acknowledge our pain, our fears, stress, any of our feelings - we allow ourselves to listen to what we truly need. And by taking action on our own needs, we can then begin to heal and move towards the life we deserve. When we deny, downplay or try to ignore the difficult life experiences we've had, we rob ourselves of our greatest assets! We cannot love ourselves while hating our experiences at the same time - this simply doesn't work. So if you're going through a rough period, I encourage you to feel. Living in a place where everything is changing is either terrifying or exciting. The fun you're having with your kids? It won't last. Those amazing memories you're making with your friends & family? Those won't last. This hard time you're having? It won't last either. The difficult decision in front of you? It won't last. The argument you're having with your partner? That won't last either.... All of it will change, shift, and cycle in the way that life always does. And there can be a sense of peace & relief in knowing that you don't control any of it. In the grand scheme of things, you don’t control anything besides how you choose to respond to life. I encourage you to embrace the impermanence of it all and find joy and as much as possible. This doesn't mean don't have feelings or emotions, definitely acknowledge those, just don't hold on to them for too long because change is inevitable & change is always happening. Be mindful, enjoy the small moments, and practice gratitude. In these hard times, self-care is extra important. Give yourself some grace and compassion in these moments and know that everything will be okay. Embrace the knowledge that everything is in a constant state of change. Embrace the knowledge that change is not something in your control. Can you think of a time when you embraced change, what did it feel like? Was it terrifying? Maybe, exciting? P.S. have you gotten your FREE wellness guides? If you're committed to getting your mental health & wellness on track we've got something for you! Have you found yourself less attracted to your partner lately? You've probably got a ton going on! We are still living in a twilight zone after all, who's got time for intimacy?? : Intimacy releases all the good hormones (serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin) that combat the stress hormone (cortisol). Yet, cortisol will inhibit the good intimacy releasing hormones. Can you see the challenge here?... Building intimacy while living in stress can be a difficult task, but it is possible! Start small, from a place of attraction. Ask yourself, what do I find attractive about my partner? Why did I choose them? What does my partner do to make me feel desired? After you've explored these questions (which have now triggered those good hormones) talk to your partner about your findings! How often do you connect about what makes you feel desired? When we feel a connection to desire, we're more likely to seek physical contact & connection. Now, let's remember what it was like when you first started dating? You had that strong desire for your partner, the butterflies, all of it! Connect to that desire again without an end goal in mind. Finally, a reminder for both of you: the couple that focuses on sex will have less of it while those who focus on attraction and desire will have more sex. Interesting, right? Rebuilding physical intimacy can take time but it can be done with small steps towards connection and desire - PLUS, having intimacy reduces the production of the stress hormone. Need I say more? When we aren’t accepting of ourselves or being authentic, we are opening ourselves up to a host of problems with anxiety, addiction, depression, eating disorders, etc. Think of it like the universe or your authentic-self tapping gently from the inside for you to show the world your true, badass self. When you don’t acknowledge this call, it gets louder and louder until it gets your attention (e.g. mental illness/physical illness). And this is exactly what I felt reading The... Gifts of Imperfection by @brenebrown. It is a powerful read that gives us an important reminder of the glorious way our lives can shift when we let go of who we think we should be and start embracing and loving who we truly are. Such a great read & highly recommended for anyone wanting the opportunity to explore what self-compassion and self-love could mean for your life, your relationships and your work. Self-acceptance is embracing who you are, living from a place of authenticity, caressing and loving your scars and imperfections and even becoming grateful for them because they have ultimately shaped you into the person you are. (a well-captured book review from Jessy!) What book are you currently reading? Do you trust yourself? You've made decisions in the past that you trusted were the right ones at that time, ones that meant a change of some kind. Whether or not you got the outcome you wanted, you still trusted yourself & made it through. We need to let go of fearing change and holding on so tight to it. We need to move towards a place of self-trust.... Ask yourself... "How much do I trust myself to deal with what's happening?" "How much do I trust myself to adapt to this new situation I might find myself in?" It's not about controlling or predicting what's going to happen, it's about going internally and sitting in a place of self-trust. Trust in your own abilities, your capacities, resources, social connections, and community. Whatever it might be - it's about trusting yourself to know that no matter what happens, or the changes happening around you, that you are a capable person, a capable human, who has tons of resources and access to those resources or help that you need. And of course, in these times it can be a bit scary and overwhelming to work through this stuff alone. But you are never alone - reach out to friends or family, reach out to us! If you'd like to book a session, send us a DM & let's match you up with one of our experienced therapists. And remember to have some self-trust because we were all made to do hard things. . . . #therapist #therapy #bctherapy #bccounselling #bcmentalhealth #abbotsfordcounselling #youarestrong #youarecapable #youareworthy #selftrust #trust #trustyourself #wellness #motivation #motivational #empowering #empowered #fear #change #anxiety #anxietytips #selflovetips #selflove #selfworth #motivated #trusting #changeisinevitable #yougotthis #ownit #selfawareness
