Way to go boys... Silver Medalists in our first year at the Canada Cup!

Congratulations to our EFL Selects on winning the Silver Medal at the 9th Annual 2102 Canada Cup Tournament at York University. This was our first year as a team at the Canada Cup. The EFL Selects floorball team that competed in the Canada Cup was comprised strictly of registered EFL house league players. Players were selected based on floorball experience, ability, potential and availability for the weekend tournament. The team was literally thrown together as soon as I was ...able to observe registered players in the open house and 2 mini-games that commenced the season. It was a rough start at the tournament. However, to lose the first two games and come roaring back 9-0 and 8-0 to finish 3rd out of 7 teams in the 4 game Round Robin showed the true spirit of competitiveness, discipline and raw talent that I knew existed with these kids when I picked the team. From there, we advanced to play the 2nd place team in the semi-final (lost to them 5-4 in game 2), before playing the Gold Medal game versus the formidable North York Bolts (lost to them 7-3 in game 1). We lost 6-4 in final. Seriously, two bad bounces the other way and we win the Gold, no doubt in my mind. That is how close the Final was and how well our boys played. I particularly would like to thank Fedor Gordeev (Westmall Wild) for stepping up and playing net with no complaints when Nicholas Mueller (Markland Machine) could not continue after game 1 with his sore knee. Fedor really helped to get us into the Gold Medal game with 2 outstanding saves in the Semi-Final Shootout. Congratulations also to Calum Slapnicar (Westmall Wild) for being selected Tournament MVP. As coach, I know that every player on this team had their MVP moments timely goals, assists, shootout goals and defence... That's what I liked so much about these guys, is that they all stepped up when called upon. My ask to the Select boys is to take what they have experienced at the Canada Cup weekend and apply it Tuesday nights. The leadership and commitment to team, plus the unselfish play was most evident as the tournament progressed. Now that we are all back Tuesday night for games at 5pm and 6pm, I am counting on the Select players to share what they have learned with the rest of their EFL teammates. That includes the rules. They really know the rules now!!! The 2012 season has been underway for 2 weeks. Registration had to be expanded and kids are still on a wait list. Thanks to all the players and parents for making this season kickoff a great success. New team jerseys coming soon.

Markham Waxers alumni Michael Del Zotto, Brendan Gaunce, Cameron Gaunce, Cody Hodgson and Steven Stamkos are coming home this weekend to play.... FLOORBALL...!!!
