Had a great time at the Government and Community Fair at Cloverdale Mall last Saturday. So many people stopped by to check us out including MPP Yvan Baker - always a good supporter of our Club! It was, after all, his and Peter Milczyns' show! Must give a shout out to the helpers to the Publicity Director Derek Peacock, - Sandra & Dave Osborne, Joyce Clitheroe, John Rainbow and of course our President Deborah Holdsworth all did a wonderful job! Hopefully all the "sign ups" will join us at our Open House on May 3rd....more about that at a later post. Photo below shows, left to right, Dave Osborne, Joyce Clitheroe, MPP Yvan Baker, Derek Peacock and Sandra Osborne doing what they do best - smiling for the camera!
So, here we go again! We’re going through a rather dodgy winter this year, and according to Wiarton Willy we still have 6 weeks to go, but we are all looking forward to Spring and some outside activities once more. Our 2018 Season begins in May. This posting is directed at all those who have stumbled upon our Page purposefully or accidentally and are wondering what’s Lawn Bowling all about? You may be thinking is this game really for me, would I enjoy it and m...ore importantly, can I afford it? All these questions and more including How, When, Where and Why, can be answered at Cloverdale Mall, 250 The East Mall in Etobicoke on Saturday 24th February where we are setting up a stall as part of the Annual Government and Community Services Fair. This Fair is supported by our local MPP’s Yvan Baker and Peter Milczyn. The Fair opens at 11am and closes at 3,30pm, so if you’re in the neighborhood, do drop by, and say Hi! (pun intended!) Some of our Club members will be on hand to answer as many questions as you can throw at them, and we also have videos on bowling, showing continuously. See you there!
So, here we are all are once more - ending what has been another successful year for our club. We have had many new members join this year to enjoy this wonderful sporting activity, but sadly we have lost a few also, and to the families of those who have passed away, our condolences remain. As for the rest of us, Tournaments, Competitions and In-House games have been played and, win or lose we have all had a really great time on the greens. In addition we have played host ...to many Corporate Events for local Companies who, they tell us, have immensely enjoyed their first experience of lawn bowling such that further new members may possibly come from this source. Our club members have also enjoyed some "fun days" of their own - Sundae Sunday, Simco Day, Canada Day (where Dave Osborne devised a new game for us all to play) and BBQ's! Our final event was the banquet at The Mandarin organized by Vicky Goora for which we thank her. Here are just a small selection of photos taken by Pat Bamber at that event. To all our members and readers, be safe this winter, stay well, stay warm and take care until we all meet up again in the Spring for our 2018 Season!
Friday, round 9 &10. 2017 Bowls Canada Indoor Singles National Championship Game 1 was against Saskatoon's Charlie Taylor. Charlie set off to a fast lead 7-1 after 5 ends and although Erik retaliated to tie the game at 7, Charlie finally won the first set 11-8. In the second set Erik pulled out all the stops and played one of his best games in the Championship! With the game tied at 4 after 6 ends, Erik scored a perfect end 4, followed by a 2, then 2 single ends to pull aw...ay 12-4. In the tiebreaker, Erik carried the momentum to a 6-0 victory! Game 2 was against Australian born Derek Dillon (now living in Alberta). Derek is the 2015 Mens Pairs National Champion. going into the game Derek was in second place, in a playoff position with a 6-3 record. However, Erik put extreme pressure on Derek with superb 1st bowl results. Finally, due to Erik's excellence and tenacity, he won in straight sets 9-3 and 11-4! Really great bowling! All in all, Erik has performed and maintained an amazing week of bowling. His final game today was very much a back and forth affair with Erik coming out on top in, yet another, tiebreaker. He finished his first National Indoor Singles with a 4 game winning streak and a very respectable 5 and 6 record. This weeks play by Erik will be an invaluable preparation for the World Indoor Bowls Council Under 25 World Championships in Newport, Wales UK at the beginning of December as well as the World Bowls Tour World Pairs Championship being held at the world famous Potters Resort in England early 2018. Our entire Club is very proud of Erik Galipeau's magnificent performances in the Championships on which he embarks - he is an inspiration to all our club bowlers to enjoy, do better and get the most out of this wonderful sport. Below we see Erik at Vancouver this week showing his typical stylistic bowl delivery. WELL DONE, ERIK!
ERIK IS AT IT AGAIN! Our much celebrated 16 year old club member Erik Galipeau is once again competing for a Championship win. This week he is in Vancouver vying with Canada's best indoor bowlers in the 2017 Bowls Canada Indoor Singles National Championship. His father Rob Galipeau is with him and tells us that Erik has been practicing well and is in good shape for the spoils! Day 1 he played Scot Wiley from Quebec where the lead changed multiple times, but in the end Scot p...layed a couple of incredible shots and won 6 -1. Second game that day was against Hirenda Bhartu of BC (he has won this championship 4 times!!) Erik produced a great second game but in the end fell to the champ....but then that's why he IS the champ! Hirenda complimented Erik on his performance and was really shocked when he discovered that Erik was only 16!...and that says a lot! Ontarian Josh Cameron was Erik's opponent on the morning of Day 2. They duked it out evenly throughout to a tiebreaker which Josh finally won. Erik took on Ed Olson from BC in the afternoon, who is considered to be one of the top contenders in the Championship. Erik played a fantastic first set winning 8-6 with some really tight heads during play. Ed took control of the second game that led to our third tiebreaker in 4 games. This time Erik spooked his tiebreaker jinx and with a perfect draw to the jack in the final end, to win 3-1. Excellent job well done Erik. 1 win and 3 losses (and 2 of those in tiebreakers) places him in a good position to get to the playoff round. On the morning of Day 3 Erik lost to Alberta in a closely fought battle. There are now a bunch of players all with 3 or 4 losses who are on the brink of making the playoffs, so every game is crucial! In the afternoon, Erik was down 4 with two ends to play. On his last bowl in the 8th end he delivered a great drive to go from down 3 to up 3 to close within one going into the last end. His last bowl was just fantastic with a great draw to the jack to take one and tie the game at 7. His second game was no contest! Erik got off to a fast start and coasted all the way to a 14-7 win to take the match! Just three more games to go....will keep you updated.
Yesterday we had the pleasure of being hosts to Meridian Credit Union for their team building corporate event. A wonderful afternoon of 8 ends of competition bowling was enjoyed by all in brilliant sunshine. Many thanks go to Elizabeth Chlebus for the refreshments and to Liner Morgan, Hank Spencer and our head coach Doug Turner for making it all happen. Today we received the "thank you" email below which says it all. Good morning Derek,... Thank you so much for coordinating and hosting yesterday's lawn bowling event at the Etobicoke Lawn Bowling Club. Our team thoroughly enjoyed playing the game and appreciated the coaching assistance of Liner, Hank, Doug, and yourself. Many commented on how nice it was to have refreshments and snacks half way through and that they would like to play again. I have forwarded them your name and the club's website in case they would like more information about membership, etc. Many pictures and video were taken but I've only received a few photos so far. I am waiting for more that capture our competitive spirit and once received, I will forward some to you. Until then, attached is a group shot of our team that you could post to the club's FaceBook page. Thanks again for making this such a memorable event for our team! Christine Patterson | Executive Assistant
