I received a call today from a friend of a person considering death by (MAiD) euthanasia. There are no easy answers to these situations, but we do know that much of what makes someone seek death by euthanasia is fear. Fear of a bad death, fear of suffering. We also know that feelings of depression or a loss of hope or purpose will often drive the demand for euthanasia. The strongest response to these situations is the willingness to listen and care for the other. Caring and journeying with the other, helping them find hope and meaning in a difficult time, helps allay the drive to seek death by euthanasia. There are no easy answers but often a caring listening friend can make all the difference in the world.
