JAN.17TH THE WATER IS TURNING ON IN MAXVILLE!!! The Maxville Water Project will mark a new milestone on Friday, January 17 at 3 pm when the water is officially ...turned on during a tap turning ceremony at the Maxville Water Tower, located near the intersection of SDG County Road 20 and SDG County Road 22. North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald will officiate the brief ceremony. He will be joined by members of North Glengarry Council and by Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MP Francis Drouin. The public is welcome to attend this event. We advise you to dress warmly, as the ceremony will be held outside. We are excited to invite our residents to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion. For decades our municipality has fought to bring water to Maxville. Located within thirty minutes of Ottawa, Maxville now has the potential to grow and to prosper to its full potential. We look forward to what the future might bring; and we thank everyone for their patience during the construction process, said North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald. We are pleased to report that the project will be slightly under budget. As previously mentioned, water charges will only begin once your water is connected. Any residents ready to connect to the water system are asked to contact their plumber beginning on January 20th. This project couldnt have been accomplished without the support of the provincial and federal government. Seventy-five percent of the projects cost ($22.5-million) is currently covered by provincial and federal funding50 percent from the federal government and 25 per cent from the provincial government. Today is good news for the residents of Maxville. I want to thank Mayor McDonald, Deputy Mayor Williams, Council and all of those who were involved in making this important project a reality. Im glad the Governments of Canada contributed to this project, said Francis Drouin, Member of Parliament for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you should have any questions, please contact us at [email protected] / T: 613-525-3087. * A copy of this press release is available on our website at https://www.northglengarry.ca/Modules/News/index.aspx
Last week our Water Works crews unearthed a piece of local history, when a sewer breach on Kenyon Street East led them to the discovery of wooden sewer pipes. T...he pipes were likely installed sometime around 1885 and had been operational until shortly before the breach. An undamaged section remains underground, now connected to a new pvc pipe which feeds from the private connection into the municipal sewer network in Alexandria. A bit of research by one of our local residents has led to a second discovery - these pipes were likely designed and constructed right here in Alexandria. The Eastern Pipe and Construction Company Limited of Alexandria, Ontario specialized in galvanized wire wound and continuous stave wooden pipes. We know little of the company, aside from some historic ads that were sent to us. Its a fair guess to say that they were true to their word when they said their product would not "rot, rust, burst, or freeze", given the presumed longevity of these pipes! According to an article that appeared in The Glengarry News in 1951, "THE factory of the Eastern Pipe, and Construction Co. at the station was burned to the ground on Tuesday morning (August 8, 1911). The fire started in the drying kiln about 10 oclock and within 15 minutes the whole factory was in flames". If you know more of the history, we would love to hear it! Water Works technician Marius Bauer was one of the staff members tasked with helping to repair the sewer connection. He said that he had only seen such connections chronicled in books and was surprised to find them used as a private connection at 47 Kenyon Street East, in Alexandria. According to an article in "Municipal Sewer and Water" titled "Wooden Pipe: A Trip Down Underground Memory Lane", wooden pipes were prominent across North America as early as the 1400s. The article sites the research of Jon Schladweiler, curator of the Sewer History Exhibit.
