Hello! Happy fall! I'm posting here today to invite you to join me in a couple of weeks for the online fibre marketplace @fibreloveaffair. The lovely @yoriko.oki is organizing the marketplace which is running over two days with multiple live vendors available online throughout the day. It should be a really fun time and I'm hoping to be able to manage a demonstration during mine. My first assignment as a vendor is to introduce myself So, hello! My name is Janna. I'm a tapes...try weaver, long time knitter, natural dyer and 2013 graduate of Concordia University's Fibres and Material Practices program. I am totally smitten with ancient textile technique and the histories and stories that come with them. I also love passing that knowledge on and have been teaching knitting, weaving and dyeing for over 10 years now. My time these days is spent between my dye studio in Pender Harbour where I dye and tag and ship my yarn, and my weaving studio at @thekubestudios in Gibsons BC where my available yarn and tapestries live, and where I weave on my 38" Mirrix tapestry loom. For the past three Sundays I have been at Persephone Brewing Company for the Gibsons Farmers Market with my naturally dyed yarns. On week one, I demonstrated tapestry weaving on my 38" Mirrix loom, and then I demonstrated Portuguese-style knitting on the following Sundays. This week I'll be there with a mini indigo vat to share the magic of indigo! Bring a white t-shirt or pillow case (or something else of that size) in a natural fibre (cotton, silk, wool) to dip in the vat. The vat will be running from 12-2!

Last Sunday at the Gibsons Farmers Market at @persephonebrewing I was weaving on my 38" Mirrix Loom and showcasing my Naturally Dyed Organic Merino yarns. It was fun to be weaving in public again and share about my weaving and dyeing processes throughout the day. This pic is from the end of the day when I pulled the weaving up to see its progress, and took advantage of the perfect lighting for photographing the colours accurately. It was even bright enough to see the front o...f the tapestry through the warps (second pic). This coming Sunday I'll be knitting the gunshot tried of my Ambershore Shawl, and on following Sundays I'm thinking of doing some natural dye demos. Seriously, the hardest part about this one-woman-show is photography. If I could guarantee that I could reproduce on colourway the same each time I would hire someone to take stock photos for me. Logwood. Before synthetic dyes logwood was industry black. When dyed correctly this deep purple actually becomes darker with exposure to light as opposed to lighter. #naturaldyeing #naturallydyedyarn #everleayarn #organicmerino

My August 18th shop update is approaching quickly! I've got everything dyed up and ready to be photographed but not everything is fully cured. Natural dyes require a curing stage which takes 2-3 weeks and I don't mess around with product that In shipping to you all (yarn for myself is a different story sometimes). So, some of the yarns listed on August 18th will indicate a curing wait time before shipping occurs. I know you all are super understanding and get that this ancient artform is worth the wait. I used the last of my local weld on these 18 skeins of organic merino. Weld offers a bright yellow which has undertones of green. In lighter values it's the perfect butter yellow. I guess it's time to see if I can harvest more of this from my secret source (hint hint, if you're listening ).
