Doulas and partners make a great birth support team! As they say, two heads are better than one! Your partner can provide physical and emotional comfort and knows you well, and a doula has the information and expertise to guide you both through your pregnancy and labour! Doulas also can support partners by helping them get the care they need during a long labour and making sure you continue to have someone at your side if they need to rest.
TW: miscarriage Miscarriages are more common than you think, but a lot of people avoid the subject because it can be very painful. A doula can actually support you during and after a miscarriage by offering information and education, completing household tasks and sibling care while you recover physically and take time to grieve if you need to, and provide a listening ear while you work through it. If you need support following a miscarriage, don't hesitate to reach out.
What's the difference between a midwife and a doula? The biggest and most important difference is that midwives are medical professionals who look after the health of the pregnant person throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, as well as the health of the baby. Doulas do not perform any medical tasks and are instead focused on supporting their client mentally and emotionally through this period. The most important thing to remember is that you can, and should, have a midwife AND a doula as part of your support team!
Happy world doula week! Stay tuned for some fun posts about what doulas can do for you!
A lot of people ask me what the difference is between a midwife and doula, and can they have both a midwife and a doula throughout their pregnancy and birth. I find this graphic helpfully describes the roles of different birth support team members.
Happy holidays everyone! Let's have a moment of gratitude!
Great news! Congratulations doulas!
What affirmations are part of your self care regime?
Inclusive language is so important. It's so wonderful to see public health units not only using the language but explaining it.
PS. We know you tampered with the clocks on Sunday which is why it looks like midnight at 4pm. Not cute. You'll pay for that.
An interesting technique for widening the pelvis. Let me know if you've tried this!
Shout out to all my 2020 mamas out there
I doula that: Sibling care. After your baby is born, you need time to bonds and form a relationship, but you don't want your older children to feel left out. As part of my postpartum services, I can spend time with your older children playing and communicating, giving them a space to ask questions and express their feelings about their new sibling while you get to know your newborn. #postpartum #siblings #idoulathat
