Lazy bones socialization, with baby Poe. She is at a comfortable enough distance from these new (socially distanced) friends, that she can settle in and work on her marrow bone. No stress, just passive association between new, talking people, and good things. #lazybonessocialization #otherpeoplespuppies #ashleysschoolforpuppyprodigies #puppysocialization

Passively teaching these puppies to be thorough, brave searchers up high, in tight spaces, over, and under. This is my favourite game to play before bedtime, as it works their bodies and minds just enough to make them feel happy, and not so much that they are wired. #workingdogs #puppypacman #otherpeoplespuppies #ashleysschoolforpuppyprodigies

Time to share this again - it’s been a while. First, make sure your pet is at their healthy weight. You should be able to feel their ribs when you press their side with a flat hand. If your pet is at a healthy weight, the feeding suggestion on their pet food bag* is a good place to start. If your pet is heavier than they should be, best guess what their weight should be, and feed according to that suggestion on their food bag. Feeding a heavy pet according to their actual w...eight will keep them at that weight. *the feeding suggestion isn’t a one size fits all. You may need to adjust according to the needs of the individual. Then, feed accurately. This means using a real measuring device (not a coffee mug or yogurt container), and measuring out level scoops. Remember that everything that isn’t water has calories. Treats, bones, dental chews, and raw vegetables or other meal toppers will add to your pet’s daily caloric intake. If your pet is really struggling to gain or lose weight, talk to your vet.

We got a new young working dog prospect to hang out with, and show the world to. Today, he met the resident dogs and got some play time with them in our indoor area. He’s a sweet, fluffy, stampy little bear cub, who would rather play with his ball than do anything else in the world. Welcome, Ed! #watchoutlittledogcomingthrough #outtatheway #excusemepardonme #otherpeoplespuppies #ashleysschoolforpuppyprodigies #germanshepherd #fluffybearcub #puppysocialization

It’s quiet around the kennel, and has been for a while. To help keep busy and the lights on, Ashley turned her side hobby, making sparkly custom dog collars, into a business. Who knew that Custom Dog Collar Maker was a career option?? Follow Wheat Kings Leather, here:... Wheat Kings Leather *the wait list for collars is full right now, but should open again in the spring :)

These puppies were raised with #puppyculture , which is a systematically laid out program for early desensitization to and experiences with everyday sounds, sights, smells, and other stimuli that often cause concern in dogs. Things like vacuuming, grooming, handling, different foods, and other experiences are introduced to the puppies when their brains are still easily forming new neural pathways, so that when they encounter these experiences later in life, they are either a ...non-event, or something the puppy can quickly recover from. It’s a real joy to not have to worry about these things and do the often difficult desensitization work, and instead focus on other life skills. If you are looking to buy or adopt a puppy, ask if the puppy has been raised with Puppy Culture (google for more information), or some other program to help accustom the puppy to the world. It’s worth the effort! #dogtraining #puppysocialization #helperdogsarehelping #workingdogs #malinoispuppy #letsomeonedotheworkforyou #ashleysschoolforpuppyprodigies See more

Not to be outdone by her beautiful sister, Ruby shows that she is All That too. If you use food for training (which I do - lots), it’s really nice to have some ground rules, so you don’t get sharky, grabby behaviour with the food (and fingers!). By playing this game, It’s Your Choice (which I first learned from a Susan Garrett training DVD), the dog learns to wait for the food instead of trying to steal it from your hand or their bowl. With practice and varied contexts, this ...skill can easily be moulded into a really solid voluntary Leave It type behaviour. *note that this is a hungry puppy working for her first meal of the day - she isn’t awesome because she’s not hungry, she’s awesome because she has learned what the rules are here. #dogtraining #thesmartermalinoissister #upyourgameamy #itsyerchoice #leaveit #cookiepusher #positivereinforcementdogtraining #malinois @aimcanine See more

I’ve been doing some fun stuff with Biscuit. He struggles with his excitement when new people are over, and instead of trying to bottle up that excitement, I’m teaching him to be able to think through it. Here, he starts to understand that listening for and following through on a down cue, gets a quick treat AND starts up the play again. The end goal is for him to ask for play and acknowledgement, by offering a Down on his own when he feels excited, instead of jumping on guests and the guy delivering the pizza. #isplayworkorisworkplay #notjustaboutthetreats #dogtraining #incompatiblebehavior #theplayway #positivereinforcementtraining #playasamotivator #ashleysschoolforpuppyprodigies

A trio of the best puppies in the world are back for some around town experiences and other bits of socialization and training. They are much bigger than when they were first here! #ashleysschoolforpuppyprodigies #puppysocialization #hueydeweylouie #curlymoeandlarry #otherpeoplespuppies #socializationismorethanjustexposure #malinois
