My father once commented on the direction of the tide while driving by a seaview. It struck me that he knew at a glance. It takes me longer to determine tidal direction. I take in the shore, watch the waves a while. I observe closely before I decide if the tide is on the way out or on the way in. Today, after I took the time to determine the tide was going out, I called my father to ask him how he knew. He talked me through it, and while he made it sound simple I realized t...wo things: He grew up on the water, worked a fishing boat. He knows the ocean. His awareness is second nature, and his instructions were based on the deeper open water. And, I usually take in the tide on the shore where it is more tumultuous, where the story requires taking in the whole picture to figure it out. Much like the work we do in therapy, there is innate felt sense, bursts of insight, and digging deep. It takes time to distill all of the bits into a true knowing. #direction #tide #arttherapist #arttherapylife #mentalhealthadvocate #selfcare #mentalhealthadvocate #washitaway #forestbathing #natureheals #naturetherapy #griefjourney #griefwork #waterheals #begentlewithyourself #trusttheprocess #perspective
Finding the balance between showing up and broadening your edges, while at the same remaining gentle with yourself, can sometimes feel like putting a puzzle together without all the pieces. It can take awhile to trust how you listen to that voice in your head, a voice that maybe has not always been received as supportive, and follow your gut - your instincts. I have committed to going to water each day this month - if possible. ... Today it didn't feel possible. After an afternoon building outdoors in intermittent rain my toes were numb, and it was close to sunset by the time work wrapped up. I told myself it was ok - to be gentle with myself. But I felt disappointment and I tried to listen to what the meant. As I stood on the deck I began to notice the sound of the brook that runs through my backyard. There was my solution. On days when making it out into raw nature isn't possible, I can climb down behind my place and step into the water that rushes right where I live. #arttherapist #arttherapylife #mentalhealthadvocate #selfcare #mentalhealthadvocate #washitaway #forestbathing #natureheals #naturetherapy #griefjourney #griefwork #waterheals #begentlewithyourself #trusttheprocess
"Derangement is necessary because our current emotional 'arrangement' is not working" I have been reading The Wild Edge of Sorrow, which has inspired me to deepen my wanderings through the wild raw nature around me, to create ritual. To paraphrase Francis Weller, one of the central gifts of ritual is that it creates a path to reaching an altered state: derangement. ... Not a state of chaos and havoc, just "simply a state that is beyond our normal way of perceiving and experiencing ourselves and the world". #arttherapist #arttherapylife #mentalhealthadvocate #selfcare #mentalhealthadvocate #washitaway #forestbathing #natureheals #naturetherapy #griefjourney #griefwork #waterheals #thewildedgeofgrief
Usually I only go for walks in the rain under very precise circumstances. It is not as though I am afraid of melting in the rain, but then again, maybe that is exactly what I am afraid of. This November I am focusing on cleansing. Processing through the multi layered grief of these last months that I started to get tangled up and snagged in. As dark as that space can be, it can become comfortable - or at least familiar. Grief work is daunting, when you allow yourself to sink... into the emotions and let go, you open up the potential for change. Which can feel even more overwhelming. Water is key in cleansing. Tears soften the knots of grief, melting them away. Water washes it all away. I am trying to place my feet in the earth's moving water as often as possible. The frigid water temperatures are reawakening my soul, and grounding my bare feet on the earth is strengthening my connection to everything around me. #arttherapist #arttherapylife #mentalhealthadvocate #selfcare #mentalhealthadvocate #washitaway #forestbathing #natureheals #naturetherapy #griefjourney #griefwork #waterheals
Wading, knee deep. She had a tale to tell today, the Atlantic. Dark, deep and bone cold. #atlanticocean #goplayoutside #ilovewhereilive #respect #natureheals #arttherapylife #arttherapist
