I know this won’t sit well with some strength coaches, but yes, don’t perform cleans if you truly want to improve your peak power output (PPO), peak force (PF), and your peak velocity (PV). But first, I’m not saying cleans are bad, I love performing them, but for athletic performances, they aren’t the best exercise option. Data from Suchomel et al. (2014) demonstrate the superiority of the jump shrug and the high pull for all 3 - PPO, PF and PF. The kinetic comparaison of ...the 3 exercises rank the cleans last. Biomechanically speaking, the cleans do not match the pattern of the vertical jump (Mackenzie, 2014), or any jumps. Hence, the ineffectiveness of the cleans for a sport such as basketball. Lastly, the learning curve of the cleans is greater than the Jump Shrug and High pull. Cleans are only as good as the mechanic, poor form, lower benefits. But the jump shrug and the high pulls register great benefits even with poorer mechanics. And their learning curve is not as great, for the high pull, or is very minimal, for the jump shrug. Thus, less time spent on learning the exercise and more time spent developing power. One more benefit should be added to the jump shrug and the high pulls, is lower risk of injuries. The catch of a clean can be very risky, especially as the load increases. The catch requires timing, mobility and good mechanics for the arms and shoulders, as well as the hips, knees and feet. The lack of one will drastically increase injury risks, whether it is an acute injury or building up for chronic issues. Cleans are awesome, but they aren’t the best exercise for sport performances. #evolveyourgame #unleashyourpotential #learniiperform #athleticdevelopment #athletictraining #athletetraining #athletestraining #athletedevelopment #athleteeducation #sportperformance #sportperformancetraining #sportperformancecoach #strengthcoach #strenghtandconditioningcoach #evolve #science #data #innovative #bevisionary #beavisionary #knowledge #chasinggreatness #sportscience
