Thankyou Kevin Van Tighem & Livingstone Landowners Group for this latest awareness info. share! It's worse now than when this article was published only a couple months ago. At the time it was written, the Alberta Coal Policy -- established by the Peter Lougheed government after extensive public consultation -- protected most of the Eastern Slopes from coal strip mining. After meeting privately with coal lobbyists, the Jason Kenney government has now done away with that p...olicy. Vast areas of the mountains and foothills are now open for mountaintop removal mines. And, in fact, there has been a run on coal leases over the last month -- it only costs a few bucks to lease a large amount of land -- and bulldozers are at work out there today, cutting new roads and exploratory trenches all over the place. Destroying our water source areas, their wildlife and fish habitats and the scenery we all love is something only the most wilfully blind and mindlessly rapacious of governments would consider. It appears that that is what we have stuck ourselves with. Rescinding the coal policy is a clear message of intent. It also triggered a leasing rush. Our best hope is that the Federal government will not approve Grassy Mountain and will not be mealy mouthed in its reasons why. From a scientific and environmental point of view, that should be a given; there is no technically feasible way to mitigate the project's selenium pollution, its water demand, and its impact on a federally threatened species - westslope cutthroat trout. Letters to the federal environment minister would likely be helpful just now, especially from Albertans. He can be reached at: [email protected]
