Tight mid back or shoulders? Many of us spend the majority of our day seated or bent over working in front of us, which can result in tightness in the mid back and shoulders. The wall angel or wall slide is one of our favorite exercises for this scenario because it can serve as a mobility screen as well as a corrective exercise or warmup for a workout, and all you need to perform it is a wall. To perform a wall angel: - Stand with your back to a wall, placing your feet 4-6 ...from the wall. Place the backs of your arms, hands, and head flat against the wall with your elbows forming a 90 degree angle. (If you’re struggling to get into that position, spin your hands so that your thumbs are touching the wall.)***Make sure your lower back is flat against the wall***, don’t arch it to make it easier to get your arms against. - From here, slide your arms up to the highest position you can reach, or until your arms/wrists start to pop off the wall or you feel restricted. Then slide down to your bottom position applying the same rules. The entire time, focus on pressing back into the wall and keeping everything flat against the wall. You should feel the muscles that surround the shoulder blades working hard. Avoid shrugging the shoulders to raise the arms. - Repeat for one continuous minute, or 3 sets of 5-10 slow and controlled reps. - If you have trouble with this movement, you have some work to do in either (or all) your pecs, your lats, or thoracic spine (mid back) extension.
