New outdoor conservation education programs start in January 2021 New for January 2021, Ausable Bayfield Conservation is introducing two new outdoor conservation education programs for students in kindergarten to Grade 3. ‘Coyotes & Pups’ and ‘Muskrats’ are six-week outdoor forest play and inquiry based programs taking place in the scenic woods of Morrison Dam Conservation Area near Exeter. Coyotes & Pups is designed for both the caregiver and their child. This program is spe...cifically for children who are remote learners in kindergarten or homeschoolers. Caregivers will learn how to assess risk and help their child explore and deepen their relationship with nature. We feel that with so many parents tackling learning at home, we needed to offer something to help guide parents to use the outdoors for learning while in a safe, natural setting, said Denise Iszczuk, Conservation Educator with Ausable Bayfield Conservation. The winter session runs from January 28 to March 11, 2021 and the spring session begins March 25 to April 29, 2021. Parents and caregivers may sign up for one of two time slots: 9 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. or 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost per child is $70 per six-week each session. The deadline to register for Coyotes and Pups winter session is January 14, 2021. Space is limited to 10 children plus 10 caregivers (only one caregiver per child is permitted). Muskrats is specifically designed for primary level remote learners and homeschoolers without their caregivers. The children attending the program should be able to toilet and dress independently, follow safety instructions, stay within set boundaries, understand the need to physically distance, and practise good respiratory hygiene. Muskrats is for students who are more independent and also need a different approach to learning this winter, said Iszczuk. We are offering a weekly two-hour field trip to Morrison Dam Conservation Area for up to 12 children with two conservation educator staff. Muskrats runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays for children ages 4 to 8 and the cost is $130 per child/six-week session. The deadline to register for the Muskrats winter session is January 14, 2021. The winter session runs from January 28 to March 11 and the spring session is March 25 to April 29. These programs take place outdoors regardless of weather. Those taking part should dress for the weather and bring a snack. It is critical that we protect our vulnerable populations and our healthcare capacity, says Dr. Miriam Klassen, Medical Officer of Health. Reducing the spread of this virus is a collective responsibility. Please continue to ask yourself, ‘What can I do to reduce the risk of COVID-19 and protect my family, friends and community?’ The Yellow Protect level provides strengthened public health measures. Gathering limits for private events, public events and religious services, weddings and funerals will remain the same as they did in the Green - Prevent level. Requirements for face coverings and workplace screening requirements will also remain the same as they did in the Green-Prevent level. Under Yellow Protect there are additional requirements for the following: Restaurants, bars and other food and drink establishments Sports and recreational fitness facilities Meeting and event spaces Retail Personal Care Services Casinos, bingo halls and gaming establishments Cinemas Performing arts facilities More information on Yellow Protect public health measures, as well as the Keeping Ontario Safe & Open Framework, can be found at: Government of Ontario Yellow-Protect Huron Perth Public Health Additional Recommendations from Dr. Klassen regarding long-term care homes and retirement homes In addition to the provincial direction, Dr. Klassen is issuing additional recommendations for long-term care homes and retirement homes in Huron and Perth. Dr. Klassen is recommending that homes put more restrictions onto visitors coming into the homes, and to cease permitting residents to leave the facility for short-stay absences and temporary absences except for those required for health care. We have seen how COVID-19 can spread among our vulnerable populations living in our long-term care and retirement homes, says Dr. Klassen. News Release Ontario Protecting Workers and Employers during COVID-19 December 8, 2020... Proposed legislation will ensure WSIB premiums and compensation remain stable TORONTO - The Ontario government introduced the Workplace Safety and Insurance Amendment Act, 2020 that would, if passed, protect employers from an unexpected increase in Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) premiums, while maintaining an increase to the maximum earnings cap for worker benefits. The loss of jobs among lower wage workers, including those in the retail, hospitality and the service sector, during the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an increase in the average industrial wage (AIG) of Ontario workers by 7.8 per cent, compared to an average increase of 2-3 per cent. The proposed amendment would limit the impact the increase the AIG has on WSIB premiums to 2 per cent, making sure struggling business owners aren't subject to sudden undue costs during these challenging times. Additionally, this new amendment will not impact the 7.8 per cent increase in the earning cap for workers, ensuring they will continue to be fairly compensated for work-related injuries and occupational diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Our government is protecting jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic by giving employers the support they need to get through this difficult time," said Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development. "Our proposed amendments will help businesses, while making sure that we continue to support workers who are injured on the job." Read more about the Workplace Safety and Insurance Amendment Act, 2020 QUICK FACTS The WSIB has frozen premium rates for Ontario employers for another year at the same levels paid in 2020. The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board is Ontario’s workplace insurance provider and covers over five million people in more than 300,000 workplaces across Ontario. The WSIB eliminated its unfunded liability charge in January 2020, leading to a $607 million reduction in costs to businesses.

Statement Ontario Supports Businesses, Workers and Families during COVID-19 November 6, 2020... Fifth-straight month of job creation indicates the provincial economy continues to stabilize TORONTO - Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, issued the following statement regarding today's monthly employment release by Statistics Canada: "Employment in Ontario has increased by 30,600 in October, marking the fifth straight month of overall employment gains. The total number of jobs created since June is 868,600, indicating that the provincial economy is gradually continuing to stabilize. However, we know there is much more work to do, and maintaining a healthy workforce is critical to our economic recovery. That's why in the 2020 Budget tabled yesterday, Ontario's Action Plan: Protect, Support, Recover, our government committed $15.2 billion as part of our COVID-19 health response. That includes a $572 million investment in Ontario's hospitals to support additional costs of COVID-19, including testing, assessment centres, laboratory and medical equipment, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Our government is planning to invest $4.8 billion in initiatives that will support jobs now, while removing barriers that hold Ontario back from a strong recovery. We are making electricity costs more competitive for commercial and industrial consumers, saving customers an average of 14 to 16 per cent. We are providing tax relief, including a proposal to provide municipalities with the ability to cut property taxes for small businesses, reducing business education taxes and permanently increasing the Employer Health Tax payroll exemption to $1 million, which would mean 90 per cent of employers would pay no EHT. In addition, we are providing $300 million available to assist eligible businesses in areas categorized as Control or Lockdown with costs associated with municipal and education property taxes, electricity and natural gas bills. We are also supporting business during the pandemic by making investments through the Ontario Together Fund, supporting the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters' Ontario Made program and creating the new Invest Ontario agency. Our government is working each and every day to ensure a strong economic recovery for the business owners, workers, and communities who have been incredible in demonstrating the best of the Ontario Spirit. By working together, we will maintain our place as the economic engine of Canada and emerge from this pandemic as a more united and resilient province than ever before."

Statement Motion Tabled to Reappoint Chief Medical Officer of Health November 23, 2020... TORONTO Today, Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, issued the following statement announcing that Dr. David Williams has agreed to remain Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health, should the motion be passed: "I am very pleased to announce that in response to a request from government, Dr. David Williams has agreed to stay on as Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health. This morning we tabled a motion to reappoint Dr. Williams. Should the motion be passed, Dr. Williams will be reappointed commencing February 16, 2021 up until September 1, 2021. Now more than ever, we need experienced, stable leadership. We need someone who fully understands the pandemic and the province's public health system as we continue to work collectively to stop the spread of COVID-19, and continue the work preparing for the deployment of vaccines. There is no one better suited for the job than Dr. Williams. Since the outbreak surfaced, Dr. Williams has been at the forefront of our province's response and has worked day and night to keep Ontarians safe and informed. Under Dr. Williams' leadership, Ontario has achieved some significant milestones in its fight against COVID-19 including: making the province a leader in testing and case and contact management, bending the curve of the first wave to help the province reopen in the summer, and working with the Ministry of Education to ensure schools remain a safe place for our kids by putting in place measures to limit COVID-19 transmission and outbreaks. In his role as Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Williams has worked closely with our federal and provincial partners as a member of the Special Advisory Committee on COVID-19, as well as continuing to consult with Ontario's local medical officers of health. These collaborations have allowed Dr. Williams to establish and strengthen relationships with our partners as we work collectively to defeat this virus. Most recently, Dr. Williams took a leading role in the development of the Keeping Ontario Safe and Open Framework, introducing preventative measures earlier to help avoid broader closures and allow for additional public health and workplace safety measures to be introduced or removed incrementally. Throughout the outbreak, Dr. Williams has provided steady public health advice, as we managed our way through the first wave and as we continue to fight through this second wave. I am pleased that Dr. Williams has agreed to continue to advise our government as we enter this critical juncture. I would like to thank Dr. Williams for his continued service to the people of Ontario, and for his leadership during these unprecedented times."

Health Unit opens up influenza immunization clinics to all ages without a primary care provider to fill vacant appointments Friday, November 6, 2020 Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) has some appointment spots available at its influenza immunization (flu shot) clinics. HPPH is opening these spots to anyone in the community who does not have a primary care provider (family doctor or nurse practitioner) and hasn’t already booked an appointment with a pharmacy.... HPPH was previously only booking families with children under 5 who do no not have a primary care provider at their influenza immunization clinics. First and foremost, our clinics provide access to those who are not able to get their vaccine elsewhere, such as through a primary care provider (6 months and older) or their pharmacist (5 years and older), says Lorna Askes, Public Health Nurse. Since we have some spots still open at our clinics, we are opening these appointments up to individuals outside of this original target group. HPPH recognizes that the demand for influenza immunizations has been high this year, and hopes that this will help people who do not have a primary care provider access vaccine. Appointments will be booked on a first-come first-serve basis to fill the remaining clinic spots. Please note that the high-dose vaccine will not be available through HPPH clinics. COWBELL BREWING CO.'s REUNION 2ND SOLERA VINTAGE November 23, 2020 Blyth, ON - Cowbell Brewing Co.’s Reunion 2nd Solera Vintage to hit shelves on November 27, 2020.... Cowbell Brewing Co. is releasing Reunion 2nd Solera Vintage, the second of their much-anticipated, exclusive solera-style beer. Reunion is a celebratory Anniversary Series beer inspired by memorable and joyous gatherings of family and friends. Its 11.7% ABV and rich, complex flavours make Reunion a perfect specialty beer for gifting, sharing, celebrating and cellaring. Solera is a process, also known as fractional blending, most commonly used in the production of Sherry, Brandy, some Ports, and authentic Balsamic Vinegar. In a Solera, young beer (or wine, spirit, etc) is blended annually with older beer. After a period of ageing, some of that blend is packaged and released, and additional young beer is added to it to mature until the next release. The finished product is always a blend of old and young beers which have matured together. Each year, Reunion will be a blend of 50% of the current Almanac Anniversary Series beer, and 50% of all the prior Almanac Anniversary Series beer. As every Almanac will be a different style and flavour, Reunion will evolve each year with flavour, depth, and interesting and nuanced maturity. Reunion 2nd Solera Vintage is 50% 2020 Belgian Quad, 25% 2019 Imperial Stout and 25% 2018 Barleywine. As Almanac 2020 Belgian Quad makes up 50% of the 2020 Reunion, it provides the most influence on the resulting flavours. Almanac 2020 Belgian Quad was brewed with three specialty malts, Huell Melon hops, Belgian Strong Ale yeast, cane sugar and Belgian Candi Syrup D90 and D180. It adds complex notes of port, dark fruits such as fig, raisin and cherry, as well as caramel and an enticing touch of cinnamon. Reunion 2nd Solera Vintage offers delicious flavours of fig, date and raisin with delicate notes of dark chocolate, caramel and tobacco. The rich complexity is complemented with a lush body and elegant carbonation. It is a wonderful pairing with rich cheeses, charcuterie, oysters and sweet desserts. Also available is a limited release cask-aged version. Cowbell’s Niagara Red Wine Cask-Aged Reunion 2nd Solera Vintage aged for 7 months in a Niagara red wine cask, and showcases notes of dark cherry, raisin, plum, black licorice and fruitcake. Both releases are available beginning Friday, November 27, 2020, at the Cowbell General Store and the Cowbell Online Store. Enjoy today or store upright in a cool, dark location for up to 10 years or more. Note: New in 2020, due to high demand, Reunion will become an Allocated Annual Release. A limited amount of this exceptional beer will be available at The Cowbell General Store, Cowbell Online Store and for Guest Bottle Service at Cowbell Kitchen. Other bottles in the Anniversary Series, including Almanac, will be cellared to ensure future availability as single bottles and as part of Celebration Collections.

HPPH reminding residents to follow public health measures to stop COVID-19 spread Thursday, November 5, 2020... Huron Perth Public Health is reminding residents that COVID-19 is still present in our area and it’s important to remain vigilant. With the current outbreak in one of our retirement homes as well as recent community cases, I am urging everyone to remain vigilant about following public health guidance to limit the spread of COVID-19 and help protect our more vulnerable populations, says Dr. Miriam Klassen, Medical Officer of Health. As of November 5, there are 13 active cases of COVID-19 in Huron Perth 10 of which are associated with the outbreak at Cedarcroft Retirement Home, and 3 of which are in the community. One of the new confirmed cases is a person from Perth East who has been admitted to hospital. It’s important for residents across Huron-Perth to continue public health measures: Stay home if you are sick Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly Maintain physical distance of 6 feet / 2 metres from those not in your household Wear a non-medical cloth face covering where physical distancing cannot be maintained. We must all act as if we could come into contact with COVID-19 anywhere in any community and act as if we could pass COVID-19 on unknowingly, says Dr. Klassen. Cedarcroft update Huron Perth Public Health continues to work closely with Cedarcroft Retirement Home in regards to their COVID-19 outbreak. As of November 5, there continue to be 13 confirmed cases associated with this outbreak 10 residents and three staff; one case has resolved, and two residents have passed away. There are currently no hospitalizations related to this outbreak, and residents continue to be cared for at Cedarcroft. Further test results are pending and another round of prevalence testing for residents begins today. According to the Ministry of Health, an outbreak in a retirement home may be declared over when there are no new cases in residents or staff after 14 days. Recommendations on masks Recently the Public Health Agency of Canada recommended Canadians wear face coverings made of at least 3 layers: two layers of tightly woven material fabric, such as cotton or linen, and a third layer in the middle of a filter-type fabric, such as non-woven polypropylene fabric. However, residents do not need to stop wearing all two-layer masks or immediately switch to three-layer masks. A two-layer mask will still provide you with protection, says Dr. Klassen. If you are purchasing a new mask, or replacing masks then consider a three-layer mask. There is also no need to switch to disposable masks with three layers at this time. HPPH continues to monitor current evidence and provincial recommendations. Calling the police to deal with a nuisance animal ties up the phone lines at the communication centre and ties up law enforcement officers when they could be focusing on other issues in the community. A private animal removal service should be contacted instead of calling the police." - Staff Sergeant Ryan Olmstead, Lambton County

The County of Huron rolls out Single-Use Item Reduction Strategy Huron County, Ontario As the Minister of Environment and Climate Change has recently announced plans to achieve national zero plastic waste by 2030, the County of Huron, too, is pleased to launch a corporate-wide Single-Use Item Reduction Strategy, with the goal of improving sustainability within the corporation. Single-use or disposable items are products and materials that are designed to be used once an...d then thrown away, including plastic straws and cutlery, disposable beverage cups, plastic shopping bags and takeout containers. Even though these items seem affordable and convenient, their continued daily use can result in the generation of more waste, creating a negative impact on the environment. The Single-Use Item Reduction Strategy will be used as a guideline to help reduce the purchase, use, and disposal of single-use items at the organizational level, unless it is deemed necessary for the health and safety of staff and the community to use these items. By reducing single-use items, employees across all County of Huron departments will help to minimize the County’s environmental impact and improve the sustainability of the corporation. With the roll out of this strategy, our aim as a community leader is encouraging staff across all departments to continue taking action and help improve the environmental sustainability of not only our corporation, but the world and communities we’re living in, says Warden Jim Ginn. When there exists a feasible alternative, the County of Huron will do its part to eliminate the unnecessary use of single-use items from corporate operations and services by using more environmentally sustainable options, replacing single-use items with reusable or recyclable alternatives, and when unavoidable, minimizing the use of single-use items and ensuring proper disposal. For more information on the County of Huron’s Single-Use Item Reduction Strategy, please visit https://www.huroncounty.ca/climate-change-energy/ or contact the County’s Planning Department at [email protected].

The County of Huron releases Residential Intensification Guidelines Huron County, Ontario To guide the design of residential intensification projects in the County, the County of Huron Planning Department has developed Residential Intensification Guidelines(RIGS) for use by local developers and municipalities. The guidelines address all residential intensification projects in the County, with an emphasis on multi-unit forms of development, and include a full range of desig...n considerations including site layout, building design, parking, and landscaping. The document’s goal is to help address local concerns and compatibility in a proactive manner, ensuring that developers understand the goals and expectations of the community and that the community can benefit from increased housing choices. The guidelines are not intended to add time to the development process, rather they are intended to streamline the process by setting clear design objectives and priorities early on so the development community will understand what staff will be looking for when reviewing applications. The County recognizes the importance of taking action, given the current high costs and low supply of housing. In order to meet the needs of current and future residents, increased density and new housing types are anticipated. These guidelines will help local municipalities and developers proactively meet those needs and diversify the housing stock in Huron County. The document will be provided to local municipalities to work with their Planners on how best to incorporate these guidelines into their local development processes. The guidelines were created with the assistance of MHBC Planning, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture, and Allan Avis Architects. For more information on the Residential Intensification Guidelines, please visit https://www.huroncounty.ca//co/residential-intensification guidelines/ or contact Denise Amersfoort, Senior Planner, at [email protected] or 519.524.8394 x3. Quick Facts: The County of Huron’s Planning Department provides services to County Council, local municipal councils, and to the public in the areas of land-use planning and environmental management. Land use planning means managing the use of land and resources. Residential Intensification occurs when an existing building, site or area within the existing urban area is developed or redeveloped at a density higher than what currently exists. Examples of Intensification include infill housing, additions and renovations to existing buildings, additional residential units, residential conversions, and new community developments. Compatible development is not necessarily the same as, or similar to, the existing development, but can coexist with the surrounding area without unacceptable adverse impact.
