Donated eye tissue plays an important role in helping people see again through corneal (the clear surface that covers the eye) transplants and scleral (the white part of the eye) transplants. Almost anyone can donate their corneas. This small and simple part of the eye is hugely important for thousands of cornea transplants a year, often saving the sight of patients for many years. #Vision loss to diabetic eye disease is sometimes irreversible. Early detection & treatment can reduce the risk of #blindness by 95%. Because diabetic #retinopathy often lacks early symptoms, people with #diabetes should get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year #DiabetesAwarenessMonth

The government is taking additional steps to respond to the second wave of COVID-19 and prevent and stop the spread of the virus. These include: Transitioning to appointment-based testing at Ontario assessment centres beginning Tuesday, October 6, 2020, providing certainty to patients as to when they can receive a test during the cold winter months and allowing assessment centres to conduct enhanced screening to ensure adherence to the guidelines released on September 24, 202...0; Beginning on Sunday, October 4, 2020, assessment centres will discontinue walk-in testing services, so the province's lab network can make significant progress in processing tests and to allow assessment centres the necessary time to reset, deep clean and ensure preparedness for the new appointment-based model; Learn more: https://news.ontario.ca//ontario-implementing-additional-p

In our latest research, prepared for Canadian Ophthalmological Society, we found that by treating vision loss, ophthalmic interventions will prevent $1.6 billio...n in direct health care costs from avoided injuries and other health care needs in 2020. By 2040, this will reach $4 billion. Access the research here: https://www.conferenceboard.ca//why-vision-loss-should-not #WorldSightDay See more

Retinoblastoma is a type of eye cancer that affects the retina, the inner layer of the eye. Nerve cells in the retina sense light and send images to the brain and allow us to see. August is Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month. Ontario's #ophthalmologists recommend: (1) get regular childhood examinations (2) watch for signs of eye problems (3) know & share family eye health history (4) wear protective eyewear when playing sports .#parentingtips

The Lions have been a tremendous support for us for years. We have a very robust #ophthalmology program here and it’s because of the generosity and the equipment that we need that helps us bring new doctors to town. "Physicians of all ages had overhead costs and could not endure a prolonged disruption of their cash flow. Sadly, Ontario has offered only an interest free loan; the most recent top-up payment was in mid-July. Even though physicians can hardly double their productivity early next year, they are still obliged to repay the loan over several months. But what happens if there is a second wave of COVID-19 this fall or winter and ORs, offices, and the entire health system again shuts down? Will the greatly-reduced income of these MDs be earmarked simply to repaying Ontario for the loan?"

#Ophthalmologists were doing more than 14,000 cataract surgeries per month pre-COVID - working hard to address wait lists - then elective surgeries stopped for months & have resumed at a reduced capacity. #ONHealth support is needed to address the long waits.

Ophthalmologists have been the hardest hit group of doctors as a result of COVID. With recent closures and a slow ramp up, eye surgeons struggle financially with overhead, wait lists grow and patients suffer. "Some of them are getting worse with time," EPSO's Dr. Agapitos said, adding some patients could be at risk of losing their sight permanently. "As their problems progress, their surgery becomes more complicated, and that's the real problem."
