The government is taking additional steps to respond to the second wave of COVID-19 and prevent and stop the spread of the virus. At least 30 people suffered eye injuries during protests in late spring, according to a study by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the University of California-San Francisco’s ophthalmology department. About one-third of the cases resulted in complete loss of vision in one eye, the study found.

"Physicians of all ages had overhead costs and could not endure a prolonged disruption of their cash flow. Sadly, Ontario has offered only an interest free loan; the most recent top-up payment was in mid-July. Even though physicians can hardly double their productivity early next year, they are still obliged to repay the loan over several months. But what happens if there is a second wave of COVID-19 this fall or winter and ORs, offices, and the entire health system again shuts down? Will the greatly-reduced income of these MDs be earmarked simply to repaying Ontario for the loan?"

EPSO's #ophthalmologists Dr. Kenneth Kesty and Dr. Cynthia Bullen have announced they will close their practice in North Bay at the end of August.

#Ophthalmologists were doing more than 14,000 cataract surgeries per month pre-COVID - working hard to address wait lists - then elective surgeries stopped for months & have resumed at a reduced capacity. #ONHealth support is needed to address the long waits.

Ophthalmologists have been the hardest hit group of doctors as a result of COVID. With recent closures and a slow ramp up, eye surgeons struggle financially with overhead, wait lists grow and patients suffer. "Some of them are getting worse with time," EPSO's Dr. Agapitos said, adding some patients could be at risk of losing their sight permanently. "As their problems progress, their surgery becomes more complicated, and that's the real problem."
