The evidence is clear: For profit long term care is inferior. The pandemic has only made this more clear. If there truly was some great benefit in selling off our public long term care facilities, the UCP would show us the evidence rather than saying what they "believe" is best. We demand the evidence! In addition, if the ucp intends to sell Carewest, we need to demand full disclosure of any conflicts.

The budget release had many things we expected and many things we are left scratching our heads over... As anticipated, funding for harm reduction services will not be reinstated, and the UCP will be selling off our public long term care facilities to private companies. The evidence shows that these actions will cost our province more money in the long run. More importantly it will cost lives. ... There were some items of concern left unaddressed. What are the details of the preliminary agreement with physicians? What is happening to nurse's and other front line worker's jobs? Surely, there is more to come.

Albertans! Lets pay attention to what is happening in Long Term Care and how it will impact us. We have already seen how the UCP's ideology has shaped their view of how healthcare should be run in the province. We believe that seniors and long term care homes are next on the chopping block. The article below delves into the concerns in Ontario with for-profit LTC homes and the sub-standard care which the residents in these homes receive. ... One of the interesting issues which this article highlights is how for-profit businesses can leak money into their own pockets. These businesses have to report and account for all expenses in certain categories of their budget such as money spent on medical staff and medical expenses. These businesses lobby the government at every opportunity to allow for more expenses to fall within the "other accommodation" envelope (how do you think the UCP would handle this?) Whenever Whitemud Citizens get down to the nitty-gritty with politicians about problems in Alberta regarding health care or seniors care- things like privatization, or lack of universal access, or standards- the split between provincial and federal responsibilities comes up i.e. "jurisdiction".

There has been a lot of misinformation coming from the UCP about the number of doctors who actually left the province as a result of their war on doctors. They claim that doctors aren't leaving despite many who have posted their resignation letters on twitter and online explicitly stating that they are leaving because of the UCP. Every other year in recent history, we have had more doctors come to Alberta to support the health of our citizens than have left. 2020 was differe...nt and I don't blame them. Who would want to come to work in a province where your work is devalued, and disrespected like this? How can we recruit doctors to Alberta when the environment is so hostile? We are concerned for what the Q1 report from the CPSA will show. Doctors renew their licenses annually so we will start to get a very clear picture of how many we have lost.

Alberta doctors offered to take lower pay and meet government’s budget for 3 years. It still wasn't enough for this government. Minister Shandro, we've said yes. Now it's your turn.
