It is with great sadness that we are announcing that Dr. Jelke Hoekstra will be retiring at the end of this year. Dr. Hoekstra has had a long and successful career. He graduated in 1981 from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and began his professional career near the Toronto area owning his own clinic for 14 years. He served as an adjunct clinical supervisor of the University of Waterloo externship program in 1985 and 1986. He also assumed a supervisory role, ove...rseeing Optometrists in a number of third world humanitarian eye care projects. He moved to the B.C. in 1996 and served as the staff Optometrist for Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam for over 6 years. He spent another 7 years practicing Optometry in the Okanagan. Dr. Hoekstra has been a very valued member of our office for the past 11 years and has many patients who have come to know his professionalIsm, kindness and humour. We wish him all the best for a long, happy and healthy retirement. He will greatly missed by both staff and loyal patients. See more

February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration Month. What are the symptoms of AMD? In the earliest stages, macular degeneration is entirely symptom free but can be detected during routine eye health examinations. The most common initial symptom is slightly blurred central vision when performing tasks that require seeing detail. Glasses cannot correct this blurred spot, or sense there is dirt in the way of clear vision. Over time, the blurred area may increase in size and interfere with reading and recognizing faces. Other symptoms of AMD can cause straight lines to look wavy or distorted, and dark spots may blank out portions of the central vision. Patients experience no pain with AMD. Canadian Association of Optometrists
This month we are featuring some of Dianes favourite frames for men! Check out these frames that make a strong fashion statement, with simple lines, classic shapes and vintage look. Styles featured from Lacoste, Hugo Boss, Miyagi, Guess and ultra lightweight Stepper.
February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration The Amsler Grid is a simple test that can be used to monitor AMD at home. The grid will alert you to any changes that may indicate a problem or the worsening of AMD. The Amsler Grid looks like graph paper, with dark lines forming a square grid. Some versions have white lines on a dark background. You can download a copy for printing here. One of the first signs of macular degeneration can be waviness, distortion, blurring or missing areas on the grid. The Amsler Grid can help you spot these early. Canadian Association of Optometrists
It's AMD & Low Vision Awareness Month! Did you know life-long UV protection and good nutrition are believed to play a key role in preventing AMD. Keeping your blood pressure down, reducing intake of fatty foods and not smoking are all recommended. https://bit.ly/2SHKdsr
