No workout is ever the same! One of the biggest challenges to sustaining any workout program is the body's adaptation and of course, the participant's boredom. At F45, our classes utilize a wider variety of equipment, including sleds, battle ropes, kettle bells, agility poles, rowers and more equipment not seen in a traditional group fitness studio. Members are forced to expand their training modes and differ their workouts, preventing boredom and adaptation. Every piece of equipment has it’s own purpose. Have you had a chance to read Mark Wahlberg’s article on Men’s Journal yet? I love to mix up my workouts to challenge myself and keep it interesting. I have become addicted to the F45 High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and added that to my weight training. This year I also added a lot of indoor cycling and trail riding for my very physically challenging role in Arthur the King that we start filming in January. Are you skipping strength days because cardio "burns more calories"? Here’s why you should NOT skip strength days! Muscle tissue is "worth more so the body works harder and burns more at rest by just having more muscle. Losing fat lowers your BMR (which is your metabolism) while building muscle increases it. Eat more while weighing less? Who doesn’t want that?... Worried your not burning enough calories? Focus on eating more protein! Eating more protein preserves and builds our muscle tissue. It also helps you feel more satiated and full for longer periods. Overall, having more muscle is better for our metabolism, building strength, curbing cravings and body composition. Trainer tip of the day: Deadlifts are a multi-joint movement that recruits several muscle groups to work together. This exercise helps you to build muscle in your legs, back, and the rest of your posterior chain. We do a ton of variations of the deadlift here at F45 but here are some quick tips/strategies that can improve your deadlifts that much more: Tighten your lats:... This is very much a lower body exercise, but your shoulders are heavily involved too, with the load hanging from your arms. That means you want your back to be activated on this movement. If it's not, your upper back is going to round forward, which can lead to shoulder and upper back issues. To avoid that, tighten both your lats and rhomboids. Hips under shoulders: You want your glutes and hamstrings to be the prime movers in this lift, not your lower back. To do that, you need to make sure your lower back isn't in a position where it is the main leverage point. Hips should always be lower than your shoulders on every rep. That should lead you to sit down and back a little bit, possibly bending your knees a little more and tensing your hamstrings. Give these tips a try and let us know what you think!
