Those pesky ticks! Now that we are in tick season, be sure to check your dog for ticks after a walk through the woods or long grassy areas. These are the common places they hide on our furry friends. You can get a complimentary tick removing tool from our clinic, and talk to our team about your dogs yearly tick medication!

Tick season is here! Ticks like to hang out in long grasses, waiting for unsuspecting friends to brush by so they can hop on for a meal! They start out quite small, but engorge up to 10x their size while feeding. To remove a tick, grasp them firmly with tweezers as close to the skin as possible and pull straight out, or use a handy tick twister tool, which you can pick up for free at the clinic! Do not grasp them by the body or crush them. ... If you need your pups yearly tick medication, call the clinic and we will set you up with what you need!

Thank you to all our wonderful clients for their patience over these crazy summer months. Fairfield saw an unprecedented rise in emergencies over the summer and had to reduce our day practice appointments in order to accommodate. Our wonderful sister clinics throughout it the valley helped us to see our clients for their annual check ups, vaccines, and non-urgent visits while we were unable to. We are pleased to let you know that we are now starting to see day practice appoi...ntments again at Fairfield! We are so grateful for your patience and understanding, and willingness to accommodate in this changing world we are now living in.

How has your normal changed this year, and how has it affected your pets?

Purrl would like to remind everyone to take it easy and stay indoors during this smokey time! Interior Health is advising residents to stay indoors as much as possible and close their windows, as the region’s air quality is currently at dangerous levels, and will likely stay that for for at least 3 days. Just like us, this poor air quality will also affect our furry companions. Pets with respiratory conditions and heart disease may be more affected than others. Pets may expe...rience dry throats, cough, and dry irritated eyes. While our air quality is so poor, it is recommended to avoid strenuous exercise outside, such as hiking or running with your dog. Limit them to short walks for bathroom breaks, and find ways to exercise or stimulate them mentally indoors for the next few days. Close windows and block drafts to protect your indoor kitties! How do you like to play with your pets indoors? Show us their pics and tell us about it in the comments!

As we head into the August long weekend, it important to help our dogs keep safe and cool while we’re out having fun in the sun with our families! Heat stroke can come on very quickly in dogs. Dogs do not cool down by sweating, like people do. Their only means of regulating their body temperature is by panting, which isn't often enough in this 35 degree weather. If your pet has been outside and begins panting excessively, drooling, vomiting, or is wobbly on their feet, seek v...eterinary attention immediately. So how do we keep our dogs cool in this crazy heat?? - Go for walks only in the early morning and late evenings, when temperatures are lower - Do NOT bring your dog along on errands - keep them safe and cool at home. Dogs die in hot cars every year, and even keeping the AC running in the car is not enough. - During outdoor activities, ensure your dogs get plenty of rest in the shade. Dogs will go and go and go, without regard to their own safety. Enforce rest breaks! - Allow them to cool off in the lake or pool, but regulate their water play with plenty of breaks - Dogs can exhaust themselves easily and can also ingest too much water if swimming all day. Lets all keep our dogs safe and cool this summer!
