Our traditional ideas sometimes muddy up the waters of our children's educations. Did you know that reading comics or graphic novels encourages multimodal liter...acy - a practice where the reader has to consider "the combination of words, images, spatial layout, gutters, sound effects, panel composition, body language, facial expression, emanata, and other comics elements" in order to derive meaning from the text? Add in a rich vocabulary, eye-catching illustrations, and contemporary themes, and we've got quite an incredible resource! The antiquated idea that "comic books aren't real books" is both unfair and untrue. When our children are able to choose their reading material without judgement, their enjoyment of and engagement with literature can create the foundation for a lifetime of reading.
