Today's Fr-EYE-day Facts with Dr. Lautner is about the importance of children's eye exams.. Did you know 80% of learning is visual? What about that 1 in 4 children have a vision problem that could impair their ability to learn in school? Often children do not know they have a vision problem because they do not know what "normal" vision is. Optometrists have ways to determine if your child needs a prescription before they are able to answer "better 1 or 2". They can also detec...t if your child's eyes are having difficulties working together as a team and suggest different methods of treatment for this. The SAO recommends at least one exam for children between the ages of 2-5 and then annual eye exams once your child begins school. These exams are so important that Saskatchewan Health will cover the cost of the annual exam through your Saskatchewan Health Card until your child turns 18. It is important to us that your child has the chance to achieve their full learning potential. Help to remove any potential barriers by booking your child in for an eye exam! Our doctors are excited to see you soon. https://optometrists.sk.ca//2020_2021-ESEL-Fact-Sheet-repl #yxe #esel #eyes #children #freyedayfacts #optometry #optometrist #school #kids

Today’s Fr-EYE-day Facts topic is the anatomy of the human eye.. For future topics, it will be helpful to have a basic understanding of the structures inside the eye - both where they are and what they do. Here is a brief overview of the anatomy of the eye that you can refer back to when needed. Conjunctiva: the whites of your eyes. Continuous with the inner corner of your eye and the inside lining of your eyelids Iris: coloured part of your eye. This is actually a muscle tha...t is responsible for changing the size of your pupil in response to light or reading (the pupil is the dark black hole in the middle of the iris) Cornea: clear structure at the front of your eye. Very important for clear vision. Focuses light and makes up a portion of your prescription. Also has many nerve endings in it which is why it is so painful to get something in your eye! Lens: this structure is right behind your iris. It focuses light and makes up a portion of your prescription. The lens helps with accommodation - or making the eye stronger to see clearly up close. The lens is also where cataracts form. Retina: made up of millions of cells that detect light and allow you to see Macula: this area of the retina is responsible for giving 20/20 vision. We monitor this area for any signs of swelling or macular degeneration. The blood vessels supply nutrients to the retina. Did you know that the blood vessels in the retina are the only ones that we can directly observe without performing surgery!? Due to this we are able to detect very subtle changes to the vessels and can detect diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other conditions earlier than in the rest of the body Optic Nerve: this structure passes all the information from the eye to the brain. We monitor this area for glaucoma. See more
