Thinking of everyone struggling with grief especially at this time of year. 2020 has been a tough year for many people. This holiday season will be more challenging for those who have lost family members this year or who are estranged from their family. Some thoughts as we enter the holiday season. ... It is important to remember that not everyone is looking forward to Christmas. Some people are not surrounded by large wonderful families. Some of us have problems during the holidays and are overcome with great sadness when we remember the loved ones who are not with us. For some people, it is their first Christmas without a particular loved one and many others lost loved ones at Christmas. And, many people have no one to spend these times with and are besieged by sadness and loneliness. We all need caring, loving thoughts right now. This year it’s especially important to give support to our neighbours, friends, coworkers or anyone you know who have family problems, health struggles, job issues, worries of any kind and just need to know that someone cares. Nobody is immune from pain, loneliness, grief or sadness. Take the time this holiday season to pick up the phone and connect with someone you know who may be on their own this holiday season. If you have a neighbour who’s lost a loved one who is on their own offer to drop off a meal, have a chat with them or even shovel their driveway and walk way. We are all in this together and we will all need support and friendship as we enter the coldest and darkest months of the year. A little smile and cheer goes a long way. These 5 Tips could Save your Relationship 1) Accept Responsibility for Yourself You and only you are responsible for your actions or inactions. This can be a real tough statement to accept, because it means you need to look at yourself, your words and your behaviours, and see how they have impacted your partner and your relationship. What actions or behaviours in yourself are you willing to change in order to create a loving more harmonious relationship? Choose 1 or 2 behavi...ours you are willing to change in order to repair your relationship. And then check in with your partner after a few days or a week to see if she or he is noticing any changes. 2) Spend time with your Partner Marriages, partnerships, and relationships only work if you invest positive time and energy in them. We need to spend good positive and constructive time together. If you spend all your spare time on away from your partner, with your peeps, your earbuds, electronics, working or at the gym then it’s hard to expect your relationship to flourish. I get you need to finish that work project or you need to work out or the kids are sick or are really little and need your attention or you need quality time to yourselves. When is the last time you spend quality time with your partners? I'm talking no other friends, relatives, children, distractions, or housework or electronics? What makes it tough for you to spend time with your partner? Just remember quality time can be a quiet coffee/tea at home after the kids go to sleep or even a lunch date during your work day. We’re doing the best we can My heart goes out to every teacher, daycare worker, early childhood educator, and teacher assistants. This is going to be a challenging school year for everyone this year and we all need to support each other and not tear them down. It’s not a perfect system and we need to support our educators who work with our kids every day.... Tips to help your kids get ready for school Remind them they cannot hug or touch their fellow classmates Help them get used to wearing their mask and learn to speak a bit louder and slower so we all can hear them. Ask your children about their thoughts about school this year. Remind them they may not have your best friend in the classroom this year. Help your child connect with your friends before school starts. Start working with your kids to express their emotions with words. Clear off your schedule for the first week or two, when your children are going back to school. Try to be home when your kids get back from school so you are there to listen to them. Start getting your children and teens off their devices and back into a better sleep routine. They need to be awake bright and early again for daycare or the school bus. This may be frustrating for everyone. And then, we may surprise yourself and find out it’s not as bad as we thought it was going to be.
