This is Lori Nikkel, she’s the CEO of Second Harvest, Canada‘s largest food rescue charity. They recover fresh, unsold food to protect the environment and provide immediate hunger relief. Through a fleet of refrigerated trucks that pick up donations of fresh surplus food they were distributed to more than 2,300 social service agencies to serve people facing food insecurity. In response to COVID-19, Lori rapidly scaled up the organization’s services, growing from operating i...n Ontario and BC to redistributing surplus food in every province and territory. They receive food from thousands of businesses across the supply chain including farms, greenhouses, manufacturers, supermarkets, hotels and restaurants. America’s first female mayor and elected directly following Kansas women gaining the vote in city elections.

This is Norma Merrick Sklarek (1926-2012) a pioneering architect. In architecture, I had absolutely no role model. I'm happy today to be a role model for others that follow. Norma Merrick Sklarek’s life as an architect was filled with firsts. Sklarek was the first black woman to be licenced as an architect in both New York and California as well as the first black woman to become a member of the American Institute of Architects later elected a fellow of the organisation. ... Sklarek attended Barnard College for a year, gaining a liberal arts qualification that would allow her to study Architecture at Columbia University. Sklarek found her architecture training challenging as many of her classmates had Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees already. In 1950, she graduated with a B. Arch. one of two women and the only African American person in her group. In her search for work, she was rejected by 19 firms. Sklarek pushed forward in her career and eventually became director of architectural firm Gruen Associates. She later co-founded Sklarek Siegel Diamond, the biggest female only architecture firm in America. Her memorable projects include the Pacific Design Center, San Bernardino City Hall in California, the US Embassy in Tokyo, and LAX Terminal 1.
