Winter is beautiful with all the glittering snow and frost covered trees. But we often find it difficult to travel. People from 1861 also had their struggles in travel, but they found some tricks to help them through. Father Lacombe and Bishop Tache came here in January 1861 riding on a dog-sled and using their snowshoes in the deep snow!
Christmas is fast approaching! As it does we like to remember that Christmas has been celebrated in St. Albert for years and years. An excerpt from the Black Robe’s Vision details the excitement the town felt when the first telephone line came to St. Albert! By July 1884, the telephone instruments had been shipped from London, England, to Edmonton. Meanwhile, St. Albert and Edmonton people were busy cutting and peeling the twenty-one foot poles.During the period between Christmas and New Year’s Eve 1884, the general public was invited to listen in on the experimental phone call made on the new line. Wow! Some great photos of St. Albert and Mission Hill, including a photo of the Father Lacombe Chapel! Thanks to Vintage St. Albert and Phillippe Gravelle for sharing!
When planning your holiday schedule be sure to include the a Christmas Past Event put on by our friends at Rutherford House Provincial Historic Site. Visit the house on December 8 to enjoy some hot cider, and maybe even meet Father Christmas!
