Happening tomorrow! https://www.showpass.com/fatty-legs/
When I first asked Margaret Olemaun if I could tell her story in 2008, she was dead against it. She jokes now that she only agreed in the end, because she thought no one would care or ever want to publish or read her story. But people did care. They cared a lot. Just finished back to back Zoom classroom visits that started at 6:30 am this morning. It’s 2pm now, and still working through booking many more others who couldn’t be scheduled for today. She thought no one would wan...t to hear her story. But people have heard it, and they’ve listened also to the stories of so many other courageous survivors, and children of survivors. We started Fatty Legs when 1/4 non indigenous people in Canada had ever heard of residential schools. And now Canada is lit up with Orange! Please keep caring. Care about children like young Lucas and his siblings who won’t see their mother again, and all the others we’re still not seeing or caring about enough. Thank you all for sharing this journey with us. See more

Great video! Many people aren’t aware of this. It also applies to Inuvialuit/ Inuvialuk. The tenth anniversary edition of Fatty Legs also includes a note on language.
Tune in for a conversation with Anishinabe singer/songwriter Keith Secola , Inuvialuk elder Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton, and myself on Native Americana Audio Cafe. NDN Kars and dogsleds. Blessed to have these two phenomenal people in my life. Margaret Olemaun Pokiak Fenton is an Inuvialuk elder who grew up in the high arctic and attended a residential school as a child. Her experiences are recounted in 4 award winning children’s books, to include the bestseller Fatty Legs. She is featured in Keith Secola’s music video for Say Your Name.
