This morning I had a lovely visit with my guide, Tan. He asked me if I wanted to go for a ride; he used to always show up with a horse, but now he's more often than not, sans horse. We went to a place that was filled with trees, crystals forming their branches. He called it the "Hallowed Place," or something like that; I caught the "Hallowed" part clearly. When I was a child, I had visions of a place where nature was wild, mountains were majestic and men wore cowboy hats. I assumed it was Texas I was dreaming about since most of my pop culture came from the US; little did my young self realize Alberta was home to all that and more. I grew up with our own wild nature, mountains, and every now and then, I’d see a cowboy hat. I also had the added bonus of water; rivers, lakes, streams and bays. They say if you are born with the s...ound of the ocean in your ear, you will always yearn for it. It took me many years to become accustomed to this landscape; for so long it seemed too open, too flat, too boring. Where were the trees? Why did people build their houses in the middle of a field with no foliage to gaze upon, or shelter from the wind, or noonday sun? And what’s the big deal with an acreage? Isn’t it just property? It was foreign to me. I was a child of the forest; drinking from a stream and knowing the melody of the birds; too quiet meant there may be a bear, or that they were sizing me up. I’d walk quicker and hold my breath in the shadows, relaxing only once I left the hidden paths and rejoined the well trodden ones. Yet, I knew I wasn’t destined to stay there. Generations before me had birthed, lived and died there. I was the wanderer; always wondering what was around the corner, over the hill and across the water. I moved here with no advice, information, money or job. I had a map taped to my dashboard and a general idea of how to get here. I didn’t know the population or climate or neighborhoods. I was then as I am now, willing to take a chance, trusting it would all work out. This year marks my 25th year of that cross country drive. Imagine my surprise when I arrived; wild nature, majestic mountains and cowboy hats! It was where I was headed all along. Now, I’ve been in AB for more years than I lived in NB. My children were all born here; I have to remind them that they are half Maritimer. We’ll likely be here until the boys are finished school, and then who knows! The open road always beckons; this is the longest I’ve lived in one place. I’ve grown complacent in some ways; or maybe I’m just home. The siren song of water also calls; for now, I am satisfied with seeing this every day. God blessed the broken road, that led me straight to you.
