Seed Starting Tip: When planting tiny seeds, it helps to wet the end of a toothpick and allow the electrical charges of atoms do their magic! #seedstarting #smallfarm #gardening #windsoressex

We use soil blocks for certain crops that are transplanted. Soil blocks are compressed using a mold. This reduces our farms plastic footprint and allows our plants to air prune. Plants air prune rather than becoming rootbound in conventional plastic trays. This creates a healthier plant for healthier microbes for healthier humans. #soilscience #regenerativeagriculture #marketgarden #smallfarm #localfood #organic #windsor #windsoressex

Certified compostable packaging. These clam shells are made of corn resin and will be recycled by soil microbes in the near future. They are expensive compared to most plastic packaging but I am very excited to reduce my impact on the earth. It is reassuring to know you must handle this packaging in the same way we handle vegetables! #regenerativeagriculture #smallfarm #localfood #organic #organicfarming #windsoressex

Composting tip #2: Cover the pile. Covering a compost pile has multiple functions. It prevents unwanted seeds and other organic matters from entering the pile. It will keep moisture in for the microbes. In the winter especially it is important to cover the pile to prevent the pile from eroding and nutrients from leaching out of the compost. You can cover the pile with just about anything including thick layers of mulch. Just remember if using a plastic cover be sure the pile is aerated some how. This allows the microbes that gardeners like to inhabit the pile. It is also important to remember to keep plastic outof the sun. If there is no uv treating it will degrade really fast.

Composting tip: when dumping a load of nitrogen rich food scraps add a large handful of a carbon based organic matter like leaves, straw or dried hay. This allows microbes to more easily digest our waste. Leaves are great when available because of the low cost. I also like to use Alfalfa hay because it is super nutritious for plants. Typically you want equal part nitrogen to carbon. #compost #organicfood #local #windsor #essexcounty #regenerativeagriculture

Did you know that Cress can grow in full shade!? Growing a tray of Cress shoots in a south facing window is a sure way to grow nutritious greens throughout the winter. No artificial light needed.

Building tip for the Windsor Essex community: Gagnon Demolition in Mcgregor has lots of second hand building materials of all sorts for a great price. I framed our new walk-in cooler for 70 bucks. I saved alot of money and a tree in the process. So before heading to lowes or home depot try Gagnon Demolition in Mcgregor for your building and home supplies.

Are you looking for nutrient dense foods? Would you like to lower you environmental impact? Come see me at the Downtown Windsor Farmers Market. Micro-greens are way more nutritious than its mature vegetable counterpart, requires no fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides and reduces water consumption by 200x while getting more nutrients than a fully grown vegetable or fruit. See you there!
