The federal government of Canada has announced several measures to support individuals affect by Covid-19. I will outline these measures and provide updates to the information as they become available. Tax Filing deadline: The filing deadline for individuals has been pushed back to June 1, 2020. Income tax owing will not need to be paid until after August 31, 2020. This deferral period is interest free. ... GST: There will be an additional one time payment in May 2020. I have seen some confusion re: how much this payment is. It is NOT a flat rate such as 400/adult. Just like the normal GST credit it is based on income. The GST credit being paid for the 2019/2020 year is being doubled. This additional amount is what is being paid in May. If you are wondering what your family may receive pm me. In many cases I will be able to help you estimate this amount. Canada Child Benefit: There will be a one time boost to this payment of $300 per child. This additional money will be added to Mays child benefit payment. Employment Insurance: The one week waiting period has been waived The requirement to have a medical certificate for sickness benefits has been waived. Individuals who do not qualify for regular EI or sickness benefits including those who are self-employed will have access to a new emergency care benefit. This is for people who are quarantined or sick with Covid-19, taking care of sick family, and parents who must stay home with children due to school closures. Applications for this benefit will be available in April. I will dedicate a specific post to this when the application comes online. Mortgage and debt payments: Mortgages payments can be deferred for up to 6 months. Contact your lender directly. If you have other consumer debt that you will not be able to manage please contact your lender immediately to make arrangements.

PSA: For individuals filing their own returns If you are using the Auto-fill function that downloads your information from the CRA into the tax software please be sure to double check all of the numbers on your slips. Particularly tax deducted. I have had several people contact me for support with returns done themselves and in all cases it has been that the software did not correctly input tax deducted when auto filling.
