A local family recently reminded me that sometimes the simplest and quietest design is the best. We considered other plans for this fireplace wall but in the end I only made a few small recommendations to transform it - and they made a biggest difference. I love the result!

When the site for a retirement cabin is Lake Koocanusa you already have everything you need to create a very special place. After many meetings over coffee, initial designs, sketches, re-design, and reviews we finally arrived at a place where we felt the cabin would be worthy of this beautiful spot. Paul told me easy transitions between the indoors and outdoors, a warm fireplace, and accommodation for a high-end sound system were important factors to consider beyond highlig...hting the sweeping valley views. We wanted the spaces to work for active outdoor living as well as for relaxing and listening to fantastic music by the fire. These finished photos reveal their dreams brought to reality! From the owners - I have to give a huge shout-out to Dwight Hulbert Construction Ltd from Cranbrook as well as they were the lead contractor on the project. See more

If you are sitting around asking yourself if you are a writer, or an entrepreneur, or a painter you should probably stop asking yourself and start doing it. People who aren’t those things don’t ask themselves if they are.

Home Offices usually start out as either an empty room with four blank walls or they are non-existent and need to found somewhere in an already busy home. We can work together to design you a real office by modifying what you already have or starting new. I love getting to know clients and finding out what will help them be productive and feel inspired. By focusing on a correctly sized work area, appropriate storage and an identity that matches your personality we can create an office that is really tailored to you. And it just might look good on a zoom call too!

Combining textures and colours can create a welcoming place to chill on a snowy Calgary day.

"Soooo... I have this idea but I need help to make it happen." That is one of the best starts to a conversation about a project! Recently, a client of mine had an idea for a bedroom accent wall but needed a bit of help to bring it to reality. We started with a midnight text conversation, a site measure and then a sketch. From there I created a detailed drawing for her to use and she headed to Rona for supplies. It is currently under construction and I can't wait to post the final result. Yes, that is a buffalo head you see sketched in!

Check out these images from a recent residential project I have been working on. This is a family dining space and living room. I love to design spaces with the art in mind. These spaces are made to be the ground for the artwork. Architecture can be at its best when it is the Frame!

Art is often on the walls but can be the true centre of any space. I have followed this artist's work for years and admire his clarity of form and decisiveness of composition. Check out his work here: http://www.jasoncarter.ca/

Let’s play! Kids are the centre of every school and they love to play outside. In this recent project I was able to combine two things I am passionate about designing for families and bringing together people and the landscape. We worked hard to provide exciting, inclusive, and inviting areas for the students, as well as places for their families and staff to meet. We custom designed unique play areas that go beyond the typical structures kids are accustomed to by using natural and local materials in new and innovative ways. It was a fun journey to put our minds into the wants and needs of the kids!

The areas of architectural projects can often be divided between service and served. This is true in residential architecture as well. When the service areas are not functioning well it can really be a headache for the family. In a recently completed renovation the service areas of laundry, mudroom, and pantry were all stepping on each other. When clean clothes, Timbits gear, and school backpacks are all competing for space in a small area you simply have a mess. We chose ...to ‘elevate’ the laundry room to found space on the second floor by filling in the floor above the entry. This resulted in a full size laundry room with natural light and lots of space to make it really function. We also renovated the mudroom area to create the storage and organization space families need. Getting the service spaces right makes a huge difference! See more

Getting tired of "medium brown" everywhere? We are too! This medium brown coffered ceiling with off-white trim was creating a traditional feel and overall was just too boxy! By painting the ceiling to match the trim the beauty of the ceiling is maintained but the traditional feel is left in the past! Next... the walls!
