How amazing is skin?! Each inch of skin is made up of 19 million skin cells, 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, and 1,000 nerve endings Skin plays an important role in regulating your body temperature. Sweating is one way, but when you’re very warm, your skin helps cool you down by vasodilation. Studies have shown vasodilation occurs when blood vessels just below the surface of the skin dilate, allowing for increased blood flow and heat dissipation.... Similarly, when you get goose bumps, it’s an inherited thermoregulatory response from our ancestors, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Each goose bump is attached to one tiny hair, which, when standing on end, helps trap a layer of insulation around the body to keep you warm (though the effect is limited to nonexistent, now that humans no longer have thick fur on their bodies). Wow! Keeping skin extra hydrated and moisturized in the colder months is also important. The skin needs to be a healthier barrier to prevent infection and overly dry skin can increase our risk for infection with bacteria, viruses and fungi. The skin renews itself every 28 days, meaning the bottom or lower layers slowly move upwards towards the epidermis, or outer layer of skin where the cells die and fall off. This process takes roughly a month. Therefore, when you're introducing new products to your skin it can sometimes take 1-2 cycles to see if the product is working for your skin. Sometimes changes in your skin can reflect underlying health conditions so it’s best to discuss any sudden or unexpected changes in your skin with your doctor! Love your skin, it's just doing its best See more
