"Can any artist render God? The Old Testament insists that God is spirit and cannot be captured in a graven image; one of the Ten Commandments explicitly forbid...s it "Any such image limits our understanding of God’s real nature: we may begin to think of God as a bearded old man in the sky, like the figure in Michelangelo’s painting. ‘With whom, then, will you compare God?' asks Isaiah. 'To what image will you liken him?’ (40:18) "Christians believe we got a true and authentic image of God in the person of Jesus Christ. The Spirit took on flesh, a human body of skin and bone and blood and nerve cells. The book of Hebrews describes Jesus as the ‘radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being’ (Hebrews 1:3). "In other words, if you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus." ~ Fearfully and Wonderfully: The Marvel of Bearing God’s Image http://bit.ly/FEARFULLYandWONDERFULLY

"Ideally, the church should be a place that reminds us of lasting truths: that God intends the best for us, that sin and failure are inevitable but forgiveness ...is guaranteed, that a supportive community bears burdens and comforts the needy. A pastor friend of mine, Wayne Hoag, did a series of sermons on the phrase 'one another.' He found twenty-nine uses of that word in the New Testament which, taken together, show what a true community would look like. They include the following: Love one another Forgive one another Pray for one another Bear one another’s burdens Be devoted to one another Regard one another as more important than yourself Do not speak against another Do not judge one another Show tolerance for one another Be kind to one another Speak truth to one another Build up one another Comfort one another Care for one another Stimulate one another to love and good deeds. I wonder how different the church would look to a watching world, not to mention how different history would look, if Christians everywhere followed that model." ~Vanishing Grace: Bringing Good News to a Deeply Divided World Book details and links to discounted pricing (ebook $1.99, paperback $3.99): https://bit.ly/PYbookVG
