For World Doula Week, this post is dedicated to @indigenousbirthab. I am honoured to offer birth and postpartum doula care to all families in the traditional territories of the Treaty 7 region. I gratefully acknowledge the Nations who graciously share and welcome us on their ancestral homelands, including the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Bearspaw, Chiniki, a...nd Wesley First Nations), As well as the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. This one is for the doulas social distancing Holding their clients from afar and virtually witnessing. This one is for the doulas with the skill Trauma informed for the babies born early and still. This one is for the doulas with feeling Who know that birthwork does not centre their own healing. This one is for the doulas with the courage Who listen deeply and know when to encourage. This one is for the doulas the care The doulas who advocate and stand witness to bare. This one is for the doulas with the respect Who learn from their mentors with keen intellect. This one is for the doulas who can hold a boundary We need them to work wholeheartedly and profoundly. This one is for the doulas always learning Who keep continuing education as a personal practice of returning. This one is for the doulas who collaborate Who know teamwork and community is how we celebrate. This one is for the doulas who are inclusive Who know that families, feeding, and birthing are not gender exclusive. This one is for the doulas working with the marginalized Actively working to make the system decolonized. This one is for a doulas just starting out Your excitement and love for birth permeates throughout. This one is for the doulas who are brave Who know that we are here to witness and not save. This one is for the doulas in burnout Who have seen, heard, and need time to hide out. This one is for the doulas who hold the space Who know it’s more than a cervix that can dilate and efface. This one is for the doulas who are wholehearted Who know that the labyrinth of birth and postpartum is often uncharted. I am not here to save you. I am not here to save you from your choices, from your past, from your pain, or from your circumstances - especially as a white woman. I can’t promise you any certain outcome. I can’t promise how you’ll feel about it. I can’t guarantee how it will unfold. ... I will walk with you. I will hold you. I will witness your experience. Restrictions to support in hospitals means that partners might have to fly solo in the support department.
