You don't need to be in Guelph for very long to discover the graceful poise of this historic landmark's towering spires! Sat atop a mesa situated at the southwest end of Macdonnell St. in downtown Guelph, it's a shining beacon of the city's history visible from most of the surrounding area. The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate - or more commonly known as the Church of Our Lady by resident Guelphites - has been an iconic centrepiece of the downtown community since its grand op...ening in 1888. Built by Joseph Connelly, an Irish-Canadian Gothic Revivalist architect, the Basilica was a sign of John Galt's friendship with Bishop Alexander Macdonnell. It's considered by the Canadian government as a National Historic Site and in 2014 Pope Francis officially recognized the building as a Basilica, the highest status a church can be designated. Living downtown, I see this iconic church almost daily and I can say for sure that Guelph would not be the same without it! Have you ever visited it in person?
