Older horses need regular *low impact* exercise. People are often surprised when I suggest that they shouldn't, in fact, fully retire their older horse. Yes it depends on what health issues the horse in question has, but if we are talking simple arthritis, keep riding! Low impact exercises include trail riding, ring work (without collection) and ground work. Here's the thing, this picture also taught me a nice lesson I always have a hard time with mornings, and yet we wanted the light of the sunrise. All the while I was tacking up a confused Wellington, I was wondering if this ridiculously early morning would be worthwhile... I honestly have no words for how beautiful it was! This is Denver, he is a 3 year old with us for training. For me, the first step towards backing a horse is simulating the aids without the actual weight and stress of an actual human. A simple way to do this is put the reins under the stirrups and keep the stirrups down while doing some ground work.
